Vanos rebuild
I am tempted to rebuild the vanos over the winter as the car won't get much use. Has anyone done it, is it a garage only job or is it just best left alone?

For peace of mind, I’d go for it mate.

Vanos rebuild
Depends how handy and well equipped you are. We just today did the VANOS seals on my mate's S50B32 engine using the parts and guide from Beisan and it's not particularly difficult, although I wouldn't recommend it as a job for a person who hasn't had a lot of experience doing DIY spannering.
Do you plan to do any preventative maintenance such as the oil pump disc tabs?

It would be worth doing them whilst in there. I don't have the specialist locking tools though.Mangozac wrote: ↑Sun Jul 29, 2018 6:46 am Depends how handy and well equipped you are. I will be listing a brand new unused S54 timing tool set with a 240 page step by step guide on EBay tonight if anyone is interested.

Vanos rebuild
Simon, thanks for opening this thread!
I noticed a bit of a rattle and a knocking noise when i rev the engine and the local garage has recommended re-building/refurbishing the Vanos. I am ok with the diagnosis but I am unsure of the approach/quote: €2,000 for swapping the whole unit with one refurbished by Mr.Vanos, gaskets and labour (including valve clearance check, adjustment).
I understand the cost of the "sawp unit" is approx £1,000... I am not sure whether to bring the car to the UK or to fork out 2,000 euros!
any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Are they taking your old vanos unit as well? I'd say £1000 to swap out a unit is expensive. I was quoted around £600 for a rebuild of my existing unit.Attilio wrote: ↑Fri Aug 17, 2018 11:24 am Simon, thanks for opening this thread!

Thanks for the quick response!
Who did you get the quote from? that might make the idea of ferrying the car across a sensible one...the £1,000 was to purchase the swap unit and sending mine as an old unit...then £1,000 to do the job, valve included and gaskets...
