Engine hesitation

Post by Bodyboarder » Thu Jul 19, 2018 6:14 pm

Hi all ..... sorry hitting this M specific section pretty hard at the moment!!

On medium to hard throttle at around 1500-3000 rpm I’m getting a hesitation/jerk like issue , feels like you’ve come on and off the throttle really quick . What’s people thought and anyone else had the same issue?

The car has a maf/brake booster valve issue and the booster valve has been ordered . Could this be related also ? If it’s throwing the maf readings out could this cause the hesitation at all?

Other thoughts are throttle position sensors ....

Thanks

I once read in a BMW technical paper that in case of light opening throttle hesitation on of the things to look out was cold air intake and high flow air filters. Perhaps worth a try with an oem paper filter.

Worth a shot .... although I have just bought a gruppeM for it

For the sake of £10 I might just put a standard one in and see if it helps or not

Any leaks in the intake boot (between the airbox and plenum)?

I had that about 60,000 miles ago, but thought it was a MAF issue, and replaced that first :headbang:

You saying that makes me think it could also be related to my maf/brake booster fault code . The brake booster valve /solenoid goes from the inlet elbow and if thats faulty could be letting not enough/too much air through and causing the maf fault /hesitation that I’m getting .

Get her scanned mate. Some issues don’t always throw up a dash warning light. Sounds like a miss fire to me.

seems to be happening when you’ve been out for a good blast and the engine is obviously running hotter than normal..... ?

Would a dodgy coilpack do this once it gets really hot?

I had a similar issue, fixed it by changing the Mass Airflow Sensor on the air intake. Are you able to scan the error codes?

Sounds electrical to me. Coil packs is where I would start.

Does it feel like a vague bounce at a rate of 3-4 bounce per second?

Try removing the MAF and running the car to see if the issue is gone.

Changed the maf for a new one , new air filter ( was a k&n ) seems to have done the trick

Also bought a new throttle position sensor ... as I’m planning on removing the intake plenum, cleaning the icv and while it’s apart makes sense to change that to sensor underneath

Also one coil pack is not a Bosch one , so bought a bosch one to replace it with ... makes my ocd happy
