19 inch alloys on an M,advice from those who have.

Post by craig3.2 » Sun Jun 17, 2018 12:58 am

Looking at various alloys, genuine Csl's and also BC Forged, etc etc.

For those who have an M Roadster,on 19 inch BMW Csl alloys,or aftermarket 19inch alloys,
Do you have to use Spacers,or are the offsets of the Csl's wheels ok without spacers, and likewise for aftermarket wheels....
Do you need spacers or are the correct offsets readily available on aftermarket alloys??
(32&40,I think??)

I have spacers on just now,10mm, due to my brake kit upgrades,a few years ago, which replaced the 15mm spacers I originally fitted, due to rubbing of the(front) plastic wheel arch liners.

Just wondering what other people had done when putting 19s on the M Roadster, cheers.

I Like the Csl look as well as that of the BC Forged, but the latter are custom made (in the U.S), and being Forged are light, which appeals....and they will make it hem to the correct offsets etc. .......Only thing is they cost £3,200 a set!!
So I would have to save for them, lol.

Any info from owners with an M on 19s would be great, incase there are any brands of alloys I have overlooked.
Also, what's the ride quality like,on 19s, compared to the Standard 18s......as over the years some have said 19s ruin the ride too much over the 18s....is this the case??

Only checking out options just now,as I want to change my wheels, and ideally for something different from the norm(hence why looking at various alloys,Inc BC forged),but also want to ditch my Spacers if I can at the same time.
As said, will have to save for them regardless of what I go for.

Cheers

Agreed but the numpty I got mine from had run flats on the standard 18s so the ride wasn’t much firmer on the non run Flat 19’s

Ive switched between 18s & 19s on all my Zs , get the right brand of tyre & the right size of sidewall cushion you would be struggling to tell the difference the majority of the time .
Mway speeds over cats eyes & hitting a decent pothole does register a touch but avoid those & no downside to 19s from my perspective ( other than tyre cost  )

Should add my Zs are only weekend use so perhaps daily drive guys can offer a different perspective

Had my CSL’s on nearly 5 years. Can’t remember what 18’s felt like.

19” looks sooooo much better though, and like Mr Wilk mines only a weekend car. Done about 250 miles so far this year.

Thanks for all the comments/feedback folks.
I did expect the ride to be compromised a bit,but interested in the fact alot of people are not using spacers, etc.
Don't you need spacers or adapters to correct the offsets? Given that OEM CSL and aftermarket wheels often have different offsets from the BMW OEM z4m alloys??
Would be going Michelin pilots,Mr.Wilks.
When fitting bigger alloys than standard on cars years ago,I always went slightly lower profile than OEM,to keep the following radius/overall size the same,so as not to affect the Speedo, etc.
Andy, having had many wheels,on many zeds, how much does keeping the OEM BMW profiles of the 224s on a 19inch alloy affect Speedo accuracy, etc!?

Thanks again, everyone

Andy tends to run one profile size up from recommended so on CSL’s which would be 235/35 and 265/30 would run 40 and 35 which is one profile down from 224’s on 225/45 and 255/40.

Don’t forget the profile will be very slightly bigger anyway due to wider tyres.

I had genuine CSLs on mine for a while, on slightly wider than 224M PS2s (235/35r19 fronts and 265/30r19 rear) and just found the ride too harsh for my taste.

Didn’t have any clearance issue or rubbing, but there was next to no rim protection - and [possibly not related) had 2 punctures within 10,000 miles on those vs 1 puncture in 140,000 miles of 18”.

I couldn’t enjoy a hoon without without worrying about hitting a bump/cats eye on a fast bend and ending a metre over the other side of the road (and you’ve probably noticed that I like to stay on my side of the road on a hoon).

I’m very happy with 18s thank you.
