How to check whether z4mc was remapped ?

Post by Rombbb » Sun Apr 29, 2018 5:13 pm

Hello,

Have a Z4MC and cruise control isn't working. I read somewhere that this could be due to a remap and the seller said that the speed limiter was removed so probably some kind of remap was installed.

I don't have an OBD device yet. Read that the most elaborate and cost efficient way is to simply get an old Win XP laptop and install some sort of free BMW software.

Besides reading fault codes will that also display aftermarket remaps ?

And should there be any, is it easy to simply flash back to the default ECU software ?

If it's only the limiter removed and if this is not causing the CC being diabled, then I'll just as well leave it be.

But if it's some broad ignition, fuel etc. 'optimization' by people who think they can substantially outsmart the BMW devs then I'd love to have that removed anyways. No need for instability just for the sake of 8 bhp more.

Thanks !

Not suggesting you do this but if you take it to the redline you should know if it has been messed with as usually they increase the Rev limit to 8200-8400 RPM.

Oeoeoeh, that's a daring suggestion :D

Not sure I can stomach holding it till the limiter, but then again, the engine is supposed to be built for it, so guess I'll give it a try.

Will report back

sport button usually ends up with memory function... so if you press it on, it will always be on as opposed to needing to press it again when you restart the car.

Thanks for thinking along

Will sport mode disable cc ? Pretty sure I tried cc after engaging and disengaging sport mode and cc didn't work, so probably that won't be it I guess.

sorry i may not have been clear, the sport button memory function is coded usually as part of a remap so if the sport button stays on after the car has been turned off id expect a remap to be in place... the sport button shouldn't have any bearing whether CC works on not.

Ah ok, thanks

I have to press it each time. When restarting the car the sport button light is off so I assume it's off then (unless a remap keeps it on without the led).

So that's at least one hopeful sign

What speed did you try CC. Only works above 30mph from memory.

The only way I know that you can see for sure if the car has a program is to copy the program with the right software and usb cable and compare it with a stock program for Z4M. Only your mechanic can do that and even him maybe be able to do not do it. The simple way would be to try going at higher revs (some programs remain at the same revs as stock), the sport button (some programs use the on off button like the stock), and the speed limit.

A bit creepy, but have you tried tracing the car’s history via forums, past dealers etc? There aren’t many Z4MCs and a remapper might well be a forum-goer.

Check for the phrases “massive difference”, “not more power, but better power” and “worth every penny”.

According to spec sheet car was delivered with cc option, so theres bound to be a wire loom going from the cc stick to the computer. If all fails I will double check :-)

Seller said that limiter was removed, just wonder if more was tweaked that might impact the cc. I will research and try to get software. Agree with you that its probably the best way. Intend on keeping the car for long so getting a bit handy with the software wont hurt. Want to be able to read error codes as well instead of paying big bucks for 5 min of work
