Thanks for the reply Christian1000. I won't disclose all the details but I can share that the figures are very close to empirical data on the Z4M coupe. All other details were also obtained using photogrammetry. Areas have been simplified in the interest of the best computational compromise
Good stuff, I was just wondering how well your model was correlating. I was going to compare it to some figures I have got from when I have done some wind tunnel tests of a Z4. With the parts you are looking at accurate cooling airflow and heat exchanger pressure drops and representative underfloor structures are key (but I assume you know that 😀). Are you using rotating boundary condtions/ sliding mesh for the floor/wheels or is it static ground?

Good luck with the development

Are you going to flo-vis the results on car once some are made to confirm the CFD you’re seeing?

Thanks for the interest Christian1000! I recognise a certain German wind tunnel in that video... What is your involvement on the aero side?

As I am sure you understand I can't share specifics to protect the IP. However, with regards to the simulation all of the physics to model and resolve the flow features accurately have been incorporated. This includes and expands on the topics you touch upon.

It is something I have been considering. It would help to close the loop with the simulations. Luckily - unlike open wheeled cars - the CFD tends to be more accurate.

After approximately 4 days of scanning the Z4MC we have got the data we need. The blue laser scanning allowed us to capture hundreds of millions of data points all over the car. This is not just for the Canards and Splitter but also for other future projects I have in mind. 8) :P

Here a little sneak peak of the setup.

The scans allow us to reverse engineer hard points, mating faces and establish no-go zones. What is very encouraging is that the photogrammetry is already very accurate in the easy to reach areas. The illustration below shows a partial capture of the underneath.

The next step is to reverse engineer the local surfaces and start finalising the Canard Design.

That's so cool! The level of detail is insane! How long does it take to do a scan?

Thanks Mangozac! Depending on the size and the complexity of the area it can range from a few minutes up to several hours. The scan shown earlier took about 2 hours. The system used is extremely accurate and versatile.

 This is awesome. Even if it's an old platform (12 year old model now!!) it's amazing to see that smart people are still developing stuff for us! I might not be interested in this for mine as I prefer the full OEM look but i'm certainly happy that it's happening!

Just as a question for you aero geeks, would a full flat underfloor be possible and beneficial?

Thanks ga41 for your comments, much appreciated! I can only explain it by the immense passion I have and there is for this extraordinary vehicle. My aim has always been to create parts that are functional yet contribute to the lines and styling of the car. A performance increase whilst looking like a GTS/CSL version.

The intent is to utilise existing mountings as much as possible. For the Canards we will have to irreversible affect the bumper, however, for all others parts the aim is to be able to return it all back to full OEM without noticing a thing. 8)

Thanks for your offer Byron.

I actually have a 45' x50' workshop where I do all sorts of different stuff in it, it's the CFD kit that I lust after :P :P and I wouldn't mind a pillar lift either...

Thanks for all the comments guys, much appreciated! Apologies for the delays in posting an update, a few weeks of holiday does that to you. Things are going well with the external canard surfaces finalised and ready to go.

We are now in contact with a variety of suppliers trying to pick the best for not only these parts but for any other projects in the future. We are working on a nice mounting method that would aerodynamically seal it to the bumper and leave no fixings exposed.

Good progress is being made on the splitter as well with many more CFD runs performed. The reverse engineering of bumper mounting faces is complete as well as the main external geometry. There will be more information posted on this later!

Hopefully we will have more information soon with regards to the production stage of the canards. Let us know what you think!
