Mad to sell Z4M & F56 JCW for F10 M5?

Post by mj2k » Wed Mar 14, 2018 7:03 pm

Z4M sits as a fair weather, summer only weekend toy for me, garaged and under a cover most of the time. It’s a special event to get it out and drive, old school in a good way. Plus low depreciation.

However I’ve always wanted an M5, can’t really justify investing extra cash into the car pool by just selling the JCW, so an all or nothing move on my part. Head says financially stupid to do it, but the heart is weak when it comes to the M5 - a car I’ve wanted through the generations from E39, E60 and into the F10. I’ve had a 520d (yay!) in each of the guises but never really touched the M desire, obviously.

Z4M is 2007 c.24k miles, JCW is 66 plate and 19k miles as my last consulting role wasn’t local, but looking to move away from consulting to employed status only 10 miles from home.

Ideally I’d love the Z4 as a weekend toy & M5 as daily, but just not going to happen! Other alternative is a 5.0 Mustang, but think the M5 is going to significantly more capable.

Any views or thoughts on my mental state in buying a higher depreciating car rathe than keep the Z as a play thing?

M5 is simply a superbly capable car that will make you feel special every time you drive it, even as a daily - BUT the running costs are not on the low side....

However, the Zed is pretty much as good as, if not better than money in the bank...

Personally, I'd borrow the money that you need from the sale of the Zed, as it will effectively be an interest free loan..

Cheers Mike.

Don’t ‘really’ need the loan to achieve it, more of not wanting more cash tied up in cars, although appreciate I’m selling an appreciating asset to purchase a depreciating one & will kick myself looking at prices in the future no doubt.

Perhaps I need to sit tight and review in 6 - 12 months when the last of the F10s are slightly older, the mini has slowed down a little (!) in its decline & an work out how to justify further car cash to the good lady :o

Make sure the F10 has warranty...Few naughty stories about the M5 engine corking... Its the only thing that is stopping me from getting one.

Dont see why you should have to pay twice to ensure your £80,000 car doesnt break..

They are lovely and go very very well, especially when mapped.

Get one of these as your daily,

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... New&page=1

With a little TLC, daily running, I hear they're good for 200k miles.

Keep the Zed for weekends. :driving:

No more depreciation and you get the best M5 they have made so far.

I’m reading up on them more & more as the potential opportunity gets closer.

Agree fully in the comment of not having to pay twice to ensure it works....even if a lot were discounted to c.£60k via finance / dealer contribution deals....the point remains the same. Read too many E60 M5 engine woes too, which ultimately put me off the V10.

I love this, but there is a challenge of turning up to clients in what many will feel is a V reg BMW as it is so stealth. The F10 almost hides its pedigree, particularly in the right colour, but at least is ‘modern’ by comparison. I’ve had comments in the past about driving a 10yr old convertible; my industry tends to have people wanting or expecting to see the latest German diesel as a company car choice, or the same car but via opt out....never quite got that myself & always been a little rogue, aside from the companies that forced a car on me :x

Stick your own plate on it and stay rouge. Happily our last director drove an old S type jag, as his daily. It's generally only the young guns, who waste their money on looks in these parts.

I love M5s.

The only one I wouldn't touch with a bargepole is the E6x V10.

Too many stories of engine & gearbox issues and BMW not playing ball, even when under warranty. Plus, that warranty gets very expensive, very quickly.

I'd happily have an e39 V8, but I'd want a facelift model myself.

However, I wouldn't have any M5 as a daily driver again as everything for them seems to be M5 only, expensive, and never in stock.

ETA: still think the e34 3.8 6-speed was the best balance between power & control...only 340bhp/290lnft but no stability/traction aids and so easy to keep in a lairy slide - and driven well, only about 20 seconds slower around the 'Ring - and of course nowhere near as snappy in greasy/wet conditions.

Flog the Z and the Mini and buy the M5. Let's face it the Z is a bit of a one trick pony. Experience the M5 and obviously tell us all about it. You can always buy another ZM again at a later date

mmm-five, yup hear you on the 5, it’s proper M tax territory vs the relative luxury we have with the Z.

yorkie, if I sell it, it will appreciate faster than billyo & won’t be able to justify another; got caught out on watches in the past that I can never afford again :x

Great idea - I think that's what I'd do. Plus you can have a manual gearbox in the M5 as well if you do that! :)

Then just stick a personal plate on - job done.
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

I had a E60 V10 M5 for a while...

Apart from the engine, which was undoubtedly ballistic when revved hard (mine was 536bhp) the rest of the car was pretty crap.. And mine was low miles with impeccable history.
Using at a daily was irksome and hard work... The SMG was an abomination.

I did see a F10 M5 in a dealers with its engine in pieces, they hadnt been out long either.. In fact it was the first one i had seen in the flesh and had covered all of 3k miles...

It's fast, and that's about it.

All or nothing brakes with a huge amount of dive, no sense of cornering grip through the steering or chassis, thirsty as fck.
