i remember the PH article on the coupe.... it was a depressing read.
Most of the original reviews were pretty much on the money, I think. Spikey handling, cramped, dynamically poor compared to the E46 M3, heavier than it should be, a bit bland looking etc. It’s just become a very good second hand buy (lucky for us). The Z4MR and 3.0si coupe arguably even more so in terms of bang-per-buck.
2008 Z4MC: heavy wheels | crap suspension | skittish rear end | wobbly engine | not enough induction noise | underwhelming turn in | inconsistent braking | lardy battery | chubby steering wheel
2006 Z4 2.5si: gone

Yeah, Evo rated the M higher than it's competitors including the Boxster in one review.

Still loving mine. Most of my friends that bought comparable cars, have probably changed cars at least two / three times in my ownership period. Says something I guess :driving:

Found it too difficult to let ours go in September and although she isn't getting much use, I still smile when I go in the garage.

Probably the best car I have ever driven. The 981 Cayman is awesome but the M really keeps you on your toes and oh my, that induction noise...

That is not an easy question to answer. There are a number of things to consider. Money being the biggest one with one car being a third of the cost of the other. Age is another with one being 12 years old and the other being just 4.

If money wasn't an object then I think the Porsche would win. The 981 makes a wonderful noise from the exhaust and you don't appreciate just how quick you are travelling as it is so well insulated from outside noises. There is a bit of rear wheel noise at higher speeds but generally 60 feels like 40 to me.

In the real world if I had to part with one, it would be the Porsche due to the money it would free up. The Zed is an absolute hoot to drive and if you are looking at value for money, I don't think there is much better. You won't lose any money on one either, unless you buy a complete lemon. Mpg is similar, tax is £200 better on the Porsche but servicing and warranty will soon gobble that up unless you are brave enough to own a 4 year old Cayman without a warranty.

If I was being timed round a track then the Porsche would win due to the handling. If I wanted to have a laugh then I would take the Zed.

Yeah they do get a write up nowadays.
Either it’s clear they are a dying breed today or it’s that no Z4M still has their original springs. :)

“Paul talks about 'proper BMWs' the same way he does 'proper Porsches' (which we're coming to, don't worry). They're motorsport inspired, two-door if possible and with a naturally aspirated engine. Hence he sees a lot of potential in the V8 M3s, particularly Competition Pack cars. There's no let up in early M3 and M5 values either, unsurprisingly, but he does describe M Coupe values as "mad." Apparently up to £70,000 nowadays, which Paul believes will have a knock-on effect for Z4s. Why? "Proper car, proper engine... distinctive."

Sometimes you have to take press write-ups with a pinch of salt. I can remember when the 1M came out there was an unprecedented 12-month hype campaign by BMW and because there was no "cheap" M car at the time, the journalists were frothing at the mouth when it was eventually revealed and it got glowing reviews. When you actually read the reviews in detail the car had many of the same "flaws" those same writers had panned the Z4MC for but the dye was cast and it was an icon. BMW didn't bother with the same hype machine though when they released the Z4M's.

I'm sad that I will be selling mine in the spring, I like almost everything about my M; it's the best all round road and track car I've owned. I'm only selling due to wanting to own a V8 once in my life and moving house, so thinning the fleet. Thankfully, for now the prices of the Z4M Roadsters are rising so slowly that I could get back into another one if I've made a mistake.
When I saw you at Deutchefest, back in the late summer Dave, you were putting a book together about the Z4M. Are you still going to do it?
