No matter, you can swap seats. But having had an old 986 for a year I knew the Boxsters handling and yearned to return to it. Even with aftermarket suspension can you really replicate the Boxsters chassis? The 981 is perfect imho, and power has nothing to do with it, if I wanted grunt I would have bought an S, but I wanted a pure sports car that i could use lots of the power with the brilliant chassis and still have a modern comfortable car you can use every day. Even on 20” wheels it’s utterly sublime, soaks up the rough and handles like nothing else this side of a stripped out track or track inspired road car. The 2.7 has plenty of shove, get it past 4K, which is very easy! and it flies in sport mode and sounds awesome.

Bottom line for me is the 981 is a better car in every respect than the M, I can’t think of anything I like more about the BM, HOWEVER, the rub is the the Porkster has cost twice what I paid for the M, so to me the Z4M remains a performance car bargain, it’s brilliant, and I’m sure can be fettled to be so much better than standard for a hell of a lot less than a 981 costs. You pays your money and takes your choice.
Glad your enjoying it man!!! id LOVE a GTS to run as a daily, i think they really hit the spot with those. I also agree on the stock z4m seats which LOOK fantastic but really dont hold you at all luckily this can be easily changed out... Main thing is youve ditched a car you were happy with but got one your now Over the moon with, does it get any better ??? Also for some of things your clearly enjoying about your Porka you really should get a drive in the new alpine it may steal you away , i think its perfect for so many of us z4m owners.
No, it doesn’t get any better!! I LOVE this 981, I’ve found the car I’ve been longing for....I don’t give a flying f**k how fast, or not, it is, it’s about how it makes me feel driving it,and on that score I have zero regrets!!

That new Alpine should be awesome shouldn’t it, 1100kg with 250 odd bhp, a true delight to throw around....well....alpine roads....

That said I’m going to try to keep my M roady, 37k miles with a fully loaded spec, it remains a superb car that stupidly holds my heart, things have naturally moved on along with cost but this is an icon, one I’m very reluctant to let go.

I have thanks, actually only the s not your one.
I don't think it was me making it into a contest about which car is better, that mantle seems to have been taken on by you in your last post...

I was mearly commenting on how I was surprised you could feel the weight difference, I've taken over 80kg out of mine and really don't think I would be able to notice back to back, I just know it goes faster round a track.
I don’t track my cars, also I don’t care one jot about which car is faster, as I’ve said I bought the 981 for its handling prowess and weight feel, which to me is far lighter than an E85, be that a 3.0si or an M, all cars I’ve owned. Strange how you’ve just highlighted my quote that the 981 is a better car than the M and not the reason why or price difference or that I think the M is a performance bargain.

Again, bottom line is I think the 981 has a much better chassis than an M, feels lighter, and that’s the reason for my comment. I commented on it not being a contest to diffuse anything potentially that might arise.

Just my opinion.
We seem to be going round in circles here! I don't think anyone in their right mind would say a Z4M chassis is as well balanced as a boxster/cayman, I certainly didn't. I was commenting on your point that you could 'feel' the weight difference, imho you are confusing weight with balance, a mid engined car is always going to 'feel' lighter on turn in at least due to not having the donkey at the front.
I didn't highlight your justified opinion about the relative bargain in performance stakes the Z4M is because it doesn't really have anything to do with the discussion topic, there is no 'contest' going on here as far as I am concerned, both great cars for different reasons.
No, sorry, you’re wrong, I’m not getting confused at all, I meant weight and I reiterate weight, I can feel the difference in the overall car, not just turn in, you don’t get any weight transfer, the 35is, a great GT car had horrendous weight transfer, the M hasn’t got it to anything like that extent, but compared to the Boxy, it has some, IMO the M is a very well balanced car, but the 981 is different, it ‘feels’ lighter, plus is better balanced with much better turn in, the chassis is sublime, it’s all about seat of the pants driving, the thing that strikes me about a Boxster is how light it feels, no getting away from it.

Tom, take what you want, ditch what you want to suit your discussion, I don’t care. You know nothing about me and my driving experiences, both on and off track. Rolling your eyes shows nothing but desperation. I’m done, we’ve gone way off topic so apologies to Beedub.

John,
when you carry a passenger in the car with you (thus bringing the car up to the weight of an e85 let's say), does it make the car into something entirely different? Genuinely interested.

I don’t know, I haven’t had a passenger in apart from my almost 11 year old slim sporty son, we don’t currently have scales so I don’t know what he weighs, I’m guessing 6 stone ish. I can’t tell any difference when he’s in it.

I also think all this ‘technical’ stuff with road cars, actual weight, power to weight etc, is irrelevant, surely a good car is how it makes you feel, how you drive it and is it to your liking means more than anything else. Either arguing or disscusing how good or bad a car is pointless, too many variables and what one might like is what another will hate dictates everything.

Say what you like for what ever reason and take what someone else says for their likes is surely the way, one man cannot dictate what another likes. Let’s just enjoy what we’ve got for our own reasons and accept others for theirs. :driving:

Couldn't have summed it up better. The word emotion comes to mind  Something quite a few cars these days are lacking. Having said that though I do like a good dose of performance :P

The tare weight of a car governs the annual registration cost in NSW, so my car has just been weighed on the state-managed weighbridge (so presumably pretty accurate). With over half a tank of fuel but no driver it weighed 1386kg.

My Westfield? It’s still languishing in my parents’ garage. I’m only allowed to import one car under the personal use regulations. I’m working on a contingency plan to bring it here too. I’m pretty sure it’s just over 600kg with me in it but I’ve not had it weighed myself.

Ah good, I was beginning to think the scales I had used were a bit off. Remind me, I think we have similar mods? Brakes, wheels etc?

Yep, pretty much. APs and Remus back boxes are probably the greatest weight savings. The seats are both OEM for now.
The wheels on the car when it was weighed were CSLs, so not my lightest. I have a set of Volk TE37s that won’t be in Aus until the New Year. I expect they will prove to be considerably lighter.
