E89 cup holder arm rest tray + phone cradles

I've recently fitted the 'full' oddments tray in my E89 as I don't use the cupholders - so the original parts are available for sale.

Included are parts 11 (2 of) and 7 in one of the photos.

Can't find anything 2nd hand on Ebay, new Ebay prices are £144 for the tray and £19 each for each plastic disc

£80 delivered.

First dibs to ihadablackdog as he expressed possible interest in another thread.

I also have the 2 phone cradles to include, not pictured (but see my owner thread linked in my sig, there are pictures in there somewhere) - one is the original one removed from my car (one section of which is snapped and the cable which plugs into the cradle remains in my car) and the other I received, randomly, with my replacement oddments tray - it is undamaged and complete and INCLUDES the cable which plugs everything in - though it has 2 additional wires than the one in my car, haven't a clue why.

If he doesn’t want them I will have the cup holder bits at asking please? What price for the phone cradle and do you know if an iPhone 7 would fit??

Sure Mick, 2nd in line.

All the cradle bits are included for the £80, they'll never go back in my car and I don't think there'd be much of a market on Ebay.

You'd need to buy the appropriate 'snap in' adapter which goes in the cradle, but I'm sure I read the iphone 6 was the last model supported - worth a Google though.

Hi,

Thanks for thinking of me :D

I am interested, just a few questions because I haven't taken mine out yet so:

1. How do you get the main tray out? On mine I've lifted the rubber matt from the "storage" side and can see two hex screws, but don't know if the phone holder has screws under it and also needs to be removed to get to them? If so, how? Does the tray then just lift out?

2. On my existing tray, the phone holder is on the left, whereas yours (and others I've seen) is on the right. I'm not bothered, but just want to check it will physically fit? I don't use the cradle either, but would like to plug it in.

3. Question for Mick...if I get this one, would you be interested in mine (i.e. without cup holders?) I'd be keeping my phone cradle etc, but could let you have the ones I get from Tim?

No worries :)

1: Yes, as you say when the cradle comes out there are 2 more screws that need to come out - after these 4 are out, it just pretty much lifts out but you do need to be gentle as there are plastic tabs on both side and at the front - so some very gentle wiggling without forcing anything will see it free. Removing the cradle is the hard part - I'm sure there's an official answer (possibly check TIS online?) which may involve removing the arm rest and attacking it from underneath - as basically there are some plastic tabs which need to be released before the cradle will come out. When I first read about it, most people just go from above with a plastic trim removal tool some brute force which does work - but I did manage to crack my cradle doing it this way. I wasn't being particularly gentle though.

Have a look here, page 7, which may help.

2: Can't say for certain, but visibly it looks like an identical part - I'd be amazed if BMW made different parts depending on orientation.

For ihafablackdog, thanks for asking but it’s the cup holders I really need. I currently have a cheapo one but I drink a lot of coffee!!!! So, no, I wouldn’t be interested in yours but thank you.
Mick.

No worries, it’s the cup holders that I want, so don’t blame you.

Doesn't fit!

Unfortunately because the phone holder in the new tray is on the different side to my original tray, I can't re-route the cable to the other side, so the tray can't sit flush!

Bugger!

Darn it.

I don't think removing the whole arm rest unit is too difficult - in theory you just need to get it loose enough to pull up and away fron that white box you can see through the holes, to the hopefully manipulate it through to the other side?

(personally I'd hide the cable away and buy the mat which fits your phone cradle slot and use it as storage)

Did you get it all out ok?

How did you hide the cable? Did you push it back into the hole that it pops out of?

I don't think I'd be able to do that (without lifting the whole armrest) as my bits near the circuit board also has a bit with two brass prongs that stick out but aren't removable from that end of the cable.

Theres not a lot holds the centre console in, if you really wanted to fit the cupholders it would be worth the extra effort to remove it and reroute the wiring.
Why do you want the phone cradle anyway, do you use it? And how long will you use it for?

Thanks.

I'm not too fussed about the phone cradle, I don't use it, so if you can get a rubber mat that fits properly (the mat from the right of my current tray doesn't fit the phone cradle side, the cradle side is tapered) then that would be preferable, cos I'd get the cup holders and a proper storage tray also.

Its the lifting the centre console bit that scares me! There are two bolts behind the armrest hinge that I briefly thought about removing, but not sure what else would need removing...or would just removing those give enough "play" to feed the cables?

I've listed it for sale, but if I don't sell it I might give this a try.

Yes you need to undo the two screws behind the armrest (which is covered by the black plastic) and you have to lift the centre console trim (it's brushed aluminium part in my car, might be different in yours) when you do that you will find one more screw, undo it and then you will be able to lift the whole rear end of the centre console which will enable you to move the cables out the way or maybe reroute it to the other side. I recently removed the phone cradle but decided to keep the cup holders and have ordered the mat to go in place of the phone cradle from BMW. There are two sizes of the mat so I hope I ordered the right one :? Aparently it has to come from Germany and now with Spain being in lock down god knows when it will arrive.

This is instructions how to remove the USB/AUX port but it shows you how to remove the centre console as I described above:

Cool, thanks.

Yes, I had found the two screws labeled "1" in the 2nd diagram but wasn't sure about any others, so its just screw "2" in the 2nd diagram that I need to get to. My trim is wood, but I think I actually un-popped it slightly at the weekend, presumably it doesn't all come out (ie around the gearstick etc), just enough to reach that screw.

If that then gives me enough play to do the friggin phone cable, then that's great.

Do you have a part number for the rubber mat you ordered (and how much was it?).

I removed the gear knob and surround trim before I removed the brushed aluminium trim. The part number for the mat I ordered is 51169150224 but like I said there two different sizes with 2 different part numbers. Measure the extremities of your tray to get the right one. You can see them here on real OEM, part number 10:

Edit: Forgot to add it cost me around 13€
