Re: Finnish Z4 2.5i Maledivenblue II roadster project
I noticed on your March 6, 2014 post..
2nd pic of the brake assembly..
I see some dirt you missed on the lower shock mount.
I thought I'd mention that just in case you missed it !
Enjoying your Zed Love
Bumpy.

Great work, the Vanos job is the most fulfilling thing I have ever done on a car.

Agree, in my e46 difference was huge. Before replacement it was difficult to reverse or do start from traffic lights. Also the fuel economy was bad.

Got to agree with that. Although completely rebuilding My Triumph GT6 gearbox in the late 1970's using just a Haynes manual comes close!Stratts wrote:Great work, the Vanos job is the most fulfilling thing I have ever done on a car.
AnttiO. Fantastic attention to detail and great photos. A post I am sure many members, hesitantly attempting their vanos seal replacement in the future, will refer to many times during the work.

Re: Z4 2.5i from Finland, *update 15.3 vanos seal job done*
Thanks
Beisansystems provides really good instructions for vanos seal replacement:
http://www.beisansystems.com/procedures ... cedure.htm
Z4 model makes little difference for the job. I can write some things i found out during the vanos overhaul:
My top tips for Z4 vanos project
-Remove radiator fan for more room, ( top cover off, 1 connector, 1x torx 1x push rivet and pull up)
-Remove a/c & water pump serpentine belts (not mandatory, but you avoid contaminating belts with oil or coolant) DIY videos from youtube
-Remove coolant sensor from bottom rad hose and drain approx 1.0 litre coolant from there (1 connector, and push clips and pull) Remember to buy new o-ring for sensor 13621743299
-Remove bottom coolant hose from thermostat housing (unclip, then pull from hose gently)
For vanos removal in Z4 you will need following special tools:
-90 degree angled pliers
-8mm stubby hex keys or short hex bit for ratchet
If vanos would not clear from engine bay, there is 3 different styles to do it.
1. Loosen that bulkhead bolts and use piece of wood to manipulate that agains water pump pulley to make more room.
2. Lift engine up first and remove engine mounts, then lower it enough to remove vanos
3. You can also remove those stud bolts from head with lock pliers or similar..
Remember, read Beisan instructions carefully, this job takes time..

Re: Z4 2.5i from Finland, *update 15.3 vanos seal job done*
In the beginning of this week i wondered why my radiator fan lower fixings would not match for anything and basically it was hanging just from the top mounts. Then i took bmwfans.info open i found out that my car is missing one part. There was no part number 5 in my car.
Then i went shopping , 20eur
Done, now fan is correctly installed

It seems as though this part is often missing, so perhaps over time is not as secure as it should be. There is one post on here where the owner found it (lying in the bottom sump cover tray I think) and posted a picture asking for identification of the part and where it belonged! Although only a plastic retainer, it serves an important role as it is not good to have the base unsecured. A good reminder to check mine again.

Still waiting for good weather to take car out. Last night we had more snow and next couple of nights will be -10celsius... no any sign of summer.
Maybe next month..
Unfortunately decided to sell this car, it has been now almost week online for sale but still 0 contacts.
