Stone/road surface damage

Post by G29Z4 » Sun May 02, 2021 4:17 pm

Now done 3250 miles from new.
Gave the car a thorough cleaning and for some reason looked at underneath part of the side skirt on the driver's side before I cleaned it. I was astonished to find in certain areas the paint blasted away by stones/road surface damage, and revealing the black plastic underneath the paint. Each part showing damage was a slightly raised part which put it right in the path of things thrown up by the front wheel and much worse immediately behind the wheel.
A quick look under the passenger side showed it to be much the same pattern of damage, though not as bad.
The raised parts are a design fault as they are right in the path of things thrown up; the flat parts are merely stone-chipped. Interestingly, the car's stone chip paint on the skirt itself does not reach underneath; the line marking the edge can be clearly seen.
Now, it probably isn't BMW's fault as regards warranty; they would simply point to our dreadful road surfaces, but how to cure it? And what is it going to look like in 5 yrs time? It doesn't auger well for longevity.
No point in claiming against the local authority, because I've driven through so many, so which is to blame?
I've bought some white Waxoyl stone chip paint to try....anyone got a better idea? Little point in putting Alpine White on for it to be blasted off again.

Anyone noticed the same thing????

Many thanks

PS I also have a 33,000ml MX5 I've had from new and not a trace of the same thing after ten years, and an F30 320i which is stone chipped in the same place but nothing like this.

Stone/road surface damage

That's pretty piss poor for a car that's only done 3k. I would question how good the paint is on there.

Black trim painted white, underneath the car and directly in the line of fire from everything thrown up from the wide Michelin’s. Is it not inevitable the paint will be damaged from road debris? Regardless of what the side skirts are made of and how many coats of paint are used, can’t help but think you’ll always see road rash like that regardless of how much the car costs.

The op has a 10 year old Mazda MX-5 with no damage.
My Z 4 is 18 years old and not showing that sort of paint damage.
It's poor going on a car with next to no milage.
I would take it back and complain.

Stone/road surface damage

I’m scared to look at mine after seeing those
Photos!

Add the damage to my wheels from stones off the road and I’m already on fixing them up.

Stone/road surface damage

I haven't noticed that on mine when it was up the bridge a while back I have about 15k miles on mine.

But its black, so I just may not have seen it. The base plate is pretty scratched up for me. I found out the hard way that the 18'' winter wheels lower the car by about 7mm in relation to the 19'' summer wheels.

Update.
Took it to BMW body shop and they accepted immediately that it should not be like that and it’s covered under warranty. But they can only restore it to original condition; they can’t put stone chip paint on it to protect it from happening again.

That's good news.

Stone/road surface damage

I’ve received my Supra mud flaps (yes before the car   ) and am hoping this would eradicate this problem as I’m presuming that the stones are being thrown back from the tyres?

OP, glad you got it resolved

Read them all the way through instead of basing your decision on the score like an illiterate pleb or you'll deserve whatever you get. The other reviews I read (only read English ones) the journalists didn't even properly research the game and they're talking out their asses.

On the other hand if you're interested in the competitive/multiplayer side of the game then these reviews are pretty useless. Go look through the Steam reviews to find someone who's reviewing from this perspective, or better yet watch some pro streams and VODs and make up your own mind. AoA deserves that much from you at least. Also realize that it's early days and there's no telling how the MP will mature over time, though in my worthless opinion the current indicators
