Cup holders? Storage shelf behind seats?

Post by PaperSniper » Wed Aug 26, 2020 1:14 pm

1. Not really a problem, but an irritant for me. Even though I am in the USA and most of my fellow drivers use cup holders, I do NOT. In this car they take up 80% of the room in the console. Had anyone figured out a way to remove them? Or are they even standard equipment outside the USA?

2. I put a microfibre towel and small bottle of sun blocker on that 3 inch shelf behind the seats. The one with the netting to keep items in place. However, those items tend to slide from side to side when I drive at a brisk manner. Has anyone figured out a way to store small, light items in that area so they won't slide around?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I bought myself a big metal case and put all my stuff inthere :)
I ended up also buying some rubber matting so the case stopped sliding around inside the trunk.
I guess you can also use a rubber mat to stop your stuff from sliding around behind the cargo net

The lint removed is for the soft top's care, right? I need to start thinking about getting some things for that maintenance. But I expect to have at least 6-9 months until that is due. I am retired, we have two cars, and my Z4 is "my" car; the other car is "out car". Meaning mine doesn't get driven as much, and it is in the garage when not on the road 99% of the time.

Thanks for the suggestions.

yes, my car used to be always parked outside, so i used to have a lot of cats, people and other virmin sitting on my car, the lint roller helps to get most of the hairs off, you just have to be careful if you go too fast you get some glue residue on the car which is annoying to remove.

Having just done a European road trip, I found the net behind the seats really useful.
We had bottles of water, cereal bars, some sweets, fruit... all tucked in there and ready for when we wanted it. The bottles and stuff didn’t slide around either.

The items causing my problem are thin, tall and heavy; such as a spray bottle of SPF sun blocker. They tend to topple over even with our gentle west Tennessee curves.

I found this tray below on Amazon that I think will work well after I glue in some thin foam sheeting to keep down the rattles. It tray is not too wide, so there is still plenty of room for the items you mention in your post.

Would the glove box not work for the spf bottle and other bits?
Would be a shame to have to install a big clunky box.
You can also get some anti slip matting that you can cut to size. Might stop things sliding around.

I can't reach things in the glove box while seated <bad back>, and besides; it is pretty danged small.

That box is very small, only 3 by 9 inches and 3 inch tall. It's clear plastic so the "handles" that stick up 4 inches cannot even be seen. The net is taller and hides the box. I doubt box would slide around, but I put some material on the bottom to prevent that. I tried it out yesterday; works like a charm! I'm happy with it. 8)

Do you have a link or part number for this box? Tried searching and couldn't find it.

As an added precaution to keep items from rattling over bumpy roads, etc, I putt sticky-backed felt on the interior sides and bottom of the three compartments. Depending on what is put into the tray the felt may not be required.

Sounds a smart idea. Does it impinge with the seats being set back/low/reclined at all though?
Any pics?

Sorry, I have no picture of the little tray in the car. But no, it does not interferr with the seats. I have the tray located in the netting, and positioned between the two seats so I can reach around to put something in there or take it out. But even if the tray were pushed to either side all the way, I do not believe the seat back would touch it.
