Windscreen crack

Post by ronk » Tue Sep 10, 2019 4:55 pm

It’s quite remarkable that a stone caused an identical crack in the demo car!

I hope you have a photo’ of the previous damage ‘screen just in case it occurs again (hopefully not of course )

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

Happens to us all I suppose, I had to replace the screen on Steve a few months ago, a stone chip had sit on my screen and I had forgotten about till I did an oil change and dropped the car back down off the Jack (gently I add) I heard a crack and Lo... A 12 inch crack across the screen appeared.. Bugger..
I only have a rain sensor but all was sorted neatly
If you ever think I'm off my rocker.. Just put me back in it and walk away... It's the kindest thing
My wife says I never listen - or something like that.
gone but not forgotton -Mean Steve - made a sound like a bear with his nuts in a trap.

BMW don’t seem to put themselves out to look after their customers. With an expensive car like yours you would think they wouldn’t hesitate to replace the screen free of charge. If they had you would feel that the dealer cared and you are much more likely to give them repeat business. A few years ago I bought a little Skoda vRs as a runaround. Reaching for a box on a shelf in my garage a tin fell off and chipped the screen. The dealer replaced free of charge at his cost not Skodas. It’s service like this that enables Skoda to finish near the top in the annual AutoExpress survey while BMW languishes at the other end of the list.

Windscreen crack

Just for information, I had what sounds like very similar damage to my E86 windscreen about 7 weeks ago. Also no impact damage and happened while my car was sitting on the driveway on a very hot day. I’ve never seen a crack developing like that before and while the heat may have been a factor I’m not sure, the car has been in considerably hotter climates in Europe without event. Perhaps not an issue exclusive to the G29.

Anyway it was fixed today by Autoglass, the technician took a long time to do it due to lack of info on the camera, it was the first G29 that Autoglass had done. It all went back together and all seems OK, they are sending a specialist round to calibrate the camera.

One good point is that they used an OEM BMW HUD screen, the tech said that since the model is so new there probably aren't any competitors as yet.
Oh now why doesn’t that surprise me....

You’re too soft Doc, BMW are getting ridiculous, normally I can’t be bothered either but this brand is taking the piss at every level, I’d have got into one properly with them on this, down to parking in front of the service bay and blocking it until they showed me where the chip was.....

Autoglass were unable to recalibrate the camera, citing 'software problems'.

Its going into the main BMW dealers on Wednesday, let's hope they can sort it. Seems like a lot of bother for a new windscreen.

Update.

All fixed now, seems Autoglass were a little heavy handed when they removed the old screen and camera. The power was on while they disconnected the camera and it blew a fuse. The main dealers spotted this and replaced the fuse, recalibrated, and all seems fine now.

Worth remembering if this is an issue in the future.

I had the windscreen on my G29 replaced by Autoglass a month ago due to a crack from a stone impact (no problems with the camera recalibration or HUD). They told me they used replacement glass ordered from BMW. Now I've noticed a small chip from another stone impact. Two issues in 6 months. Perhaps it's just bad luck but I wondered if others have experienced many problems which might suggest a design or build flaw of some kind? I did many more miles on my previous 320d and only had 1 windscreen issue in 3 years.

I've also had my windscreen replaced due to a crack in the Top center area, near to the mirror and all electronic sensors stuff. BMW dealership inspected the crack (with a sharp pecil..) stating that the damage was caused by a very small stone, so had to make an insurance claim to get it financed..

Quite a lot of us getting our windscreen broken, makes me wonder if it's some kind of factory defect? Maybe a series of windscreens were eg. A bit too thin or there is some mechanical tension in this area?

Fortunately my screen hasn’t cracked but I did manage to get a wiper arc scratch on it a few months ago which I’ll just have to live with. Bloody annoying though and I was surprised how easily it seemed to scratch considering I’ve never had this happen on any car before. To add to this, I recently bought a new 5 series hybrid and almost as soon as I got it home, I noticed another wiper arc scratch which must have been done by the dealers being careless. Fair play to them, they replaced the screen with an OEM one without fuss or delay but it does make you wonder whether these screens aren’t as resilient as they used to be or whether it’s just bad luck

Just wondering how you get 'wiper arc scratch' from your wipers? Are they not made of a rubber compound like mine? Rubber on glass won't scratch. :?

I agree buy it only takes a bit of grit to be trapped then one swipe and you’ve got a scratch. It would be better if the washers squirted a good blast of water prior to a swipe of the blades?

Ah right. I thought there was something wrong with your wiper's rubber compound or strange glass in the windscreen. I use rainex. Right good stuff and never have to use the wipers so windscreen stays immaculate all the time.

Rainex is good!

Think I would have at least asked them to point the chip out to me. Then again if you can afford the G29 you can afford a screen or 2 lol :D
Every time I've taken a stone chip worthy of a crack I have heard it hit like a shot... last one I got I ran quickly to the auto parts house and did a pretty good repair with one of the many kits available. You can barely see it if you know it's there. So far so good.
