Car literally pebble-dashed

Post by jepowl » Wed May 12, 2021 1:56 pm

Hi all - looking for some advice.

In the storms last night in Yorkshire, our house was hit by horizontal hail, which pelted the car. No problem with that, but the hail also pelted the side of the house, which caused stones to fall off the pebble dashing, which left my car covered in a bucket load of stones.

It has cause dozens of very small chips to the paint, all fractions of a millimetre.

My question is - do I get some paint coloured wax to treat the car with, to 'fill these in', or do I use T-Cut to get rid? or both?

Examples attached...

Any 'fix' of that kind would be less than satisfactory I'd have thought.
Is it worth looking at your house insurance to see if it may be covered?

My dad had something similar (damage to car and house in one incident) had to claim each insurance separately. Something to do with you cannot benefit personally from a separate policy held in your name for damage to property owned by you.

Iirc it’s a clause to stop fraud

We had some ridge tiles blow off our roof a few years back. One hit my wife's Focus and put a hefty dent in the wing. Spoke to my house insurance company about a claim and they said I would have to claim on the car insurance. I think you're looking at a wing respray to sort that out TBH. If the paint is pitted then no amount of T Cut will sort that out.

Fortunately my house and car insurance are on a joint deal, which makes it simpler. Taking it to a body shop for inspection tomorrow.

Possibly a claim on the house insurance but be prepared to be asked for proof that the pebbledash cause the damage.

Know its a longshot but pebbles with paint on would go a long way or / and photos of damage to the house wall and where the car was parked in relation to it the insurance company get arsey.

FWIW OP I worked in insurance claims for over 30 years and any claim for that will be on your motor policy so will be subject to that excess.

Any Third Party cover on your Home insurance is there to cover you for damage to other people's property (like neighbours, etc.) not your own, and house insurance policies exclude damage to motor vehicles owned by you and/or in your custody/control.

But I hope you can get it sorted OK.

Taken to BMW today - essentially all the driver's side, bonnet, door mirror cover and boot respray needed, oh, and also windscreen has about 10 tiny chips.

      Going to be expensive.

I had a hail damaged Discovery a few years ago - golf ball sized hail - it made some good dents on the roof but no paint damage - I couldn’t see the roof so I let them stay !

If I had kept the car I would have had them lifted.

The hail storm came in a very narrow band just west of Durham City - I was told that there were a few teams dent removal fellas from the Europe shipped in to cope with repair demand.
A chap not far from us had his 9Hr old Merc written off the damage was so bad - He didn't want a new car repaired either.
No doubt somebody repaired it and had a cracker of a car.

The car is back from the BMW body shop - approx 75% resprayed, new windscreen also.

Looks brand new again! - Have bought a Halfords cover for rainstorms etc..

      Lesson learned.
