Tyre Sealant

Post by John H100 » Wed Feb 17, 2021 8:44 am

We had a tyre go flat on us on Sunday, we were in the Mini, it has exactly the same pump and canister of sealant as in our G29.
I followed the instructions to the letter, the sealant didn't work, I had to contact Mini Assist who were excellent, they had a flat bed out to us within 45 minutes to take us home.
I ordered a new tyre, on the assumption that there must be a split in the one that deflated.
The tyre fitter came yesterday, popped the new tyre on for us, I asked to look at the other one to see what had caused the deflation.
The tyre fitter and I could only find what looked like a very small hole from from something like a nail or a screw.
It doesn't give me much faith in our "get me out of a hole" kits!!

That doesn't sound too promising does it?
Unless maybe the flat had caused the edge of the tyre to break its contact with the rim too?

hehe even if it worked I don't think I would use it, it's easier to call the BMW roadside assistance, and if I'm not mistaken its included for free when you buy a new car. :-)

I was on my way to York for my Covid vaccination, obviously I wanted to get there so I tried the sealant.
The tyre fitter did say that is doesn't harm anything to use it and that the wheel is easily cleaned.
I also wouldn't want to waste the recover people's time and leave other folk waiting to be recovered if it's something I could easily resolve myself.

Not sure of the circumstances in your case, but the key to using these is to get it in, then drive off straight away to spin the sealant inside the tyre where it will find the leak. Just putting it in if the valve is at the bottom and the hole is at the top may not be effective at the roadside. - They're then only good for a couple of dozen miles to limp to a garage.

I did follow the procedure which recommend if it didn't work drive the car back and forth and then try to inflate....it didn't work.
The inside of tyre was liberally coated in the sealant as I saw yesterday.

Looking at the conditions in your photo makes me wonder if there is a minimum temperature the sealant will work at?

Honestly, it’s a bmw assist call at anything like that. Saying that, I was on runflats before this car.

I replaced my rft on the E89 with std tyres.
I keep a space saver in the boot.
In 7 years of having it, not needed it.
