Winter tires?

Post by raven » Mon Nov 16, 2020 1:04 pm

Hello,

I was wondering, is anyone here still using the car during winter? If yes, do you place winter tires and wich ones?
I currently have the default bmw ones "Continental Winter Contact TS830P" but gripwise the difference compared to the michelin summer tires is huge especially when its losing grip quite often when accellerating even when at speed.

Does anyone have a good alternative set?

Winter tyres tend not to be as effective when the temperature rises above 7C. In warmers temperatures, they can feel a bit flabby under acceleration compared to summer tyres.

I usually change to winter tyres between December and March; if there is any dodgy weather they immediately show their worth. I have wheels and tyres sourced from BMW; my dealer stores the wheels and changes them when I ask (for a fee!). I can't recall if they are Continentals, but I will be getting them changed after the lockdown.

Michelin Cross Climates if you want an all year round tyre that copes with everything winter can throw at it and still crack on in the summer...an out and out summer tyre will obviously out perform it but they are still a great tyre
if its got tits or tyres..its trouble :D

Here bmw works with fixed dates, usually its about the same time as the summer/wintertime change, a few weeks before and after .

During lockdown they force the dealerships to close except for urgent repairs. I had the same problem during last lockdown, so i decided to switch as soon as possible, so i didnt have to do all winter with my summer tires.

And do you have special winter rims?

Not that the need for winter tyres is urgent as with corona i am not driving an awfull lot :)

But in case i would need them, i want to still have 19´...so wondered if your winter tyres have new wheels to.

I use Conti TS830 / TS850 on the E89/F56/XC70..

As they are a pure play winter tyre in the dry they won't compare to a summer tyre on a warm day..

For what they are designed to do, which is drive well in very cold n wet conditions with maybe light snow they are very good..IMHO

If you need a tire that performs well above 8c then as others have said an all seasons tyre maybe a better choice..

The one time I id drive the Z4 at around 19c-21c on TS830s in 'hooning' mode they went off very quickly and were wearing out v fast..

They dont feel nearly as grippy as the wintertires i had on my 4 gran coupe, even when it is colder and or snowing,
but maybe its just the weight difference or the horsepower/torque difference and something i need to get used to

+1 for Cross Climates, I've had them on two cars winter and summer, they worked as well as my previous Mud & Snow winter-only set in the snow/ice and drove and wore very well in the summer. Expensive but worth it.

I have a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin 4 on my E89 for winter, and while they're fantastic in the dead of winter, I think I wouldn't go for a full winter tyre in the UK again. They are only actually useful for the coldest portion of the year (around 2 months or so when its below 7c). Instead, I think I would next go for CrossClimates as my winter tyres, and maintain a set of full summers too. CrossClimates will perform better in the wet winters we usually get.

Yes, winter rims with winter tyres...
I have winter rims with mine. The cost of swapping the tyres over every season will run you around £100 a change which will quickly rack up doing it twice a year. As it is a very grimy time of year, with lots of road salts that can be corrosive on your wheels, it would be best to go for a painted finish rather than diamond cut, as this will hold up to the seasonal muck for longer before needing to be refurbished (as well as being much cheaper to refurbish too).

this is a good channel to watch before going for winters. If you see more cold rain and not much snow crossclimates are the way to go.

"Yes, winter rims with winter tyres..."

I second that. Don't just go for winter tires, purchase a whole matching set as well.

My winter wheels finally came into my local Bmw today. Nice not to be getting to much salt on my diamond cut wheels.
