Seems there’s a fair bit in the download as it states in the release notes and various forums online. Will have a try this weekend. See if it finally updates.
It is much quicker to download the update on a phone and then connect the phone to the car to transfer. It takes about 30 minutes to transfer and then a further 20 minutes or so for installation.

Steps:
- downloaded update to phone
- connected phone via WIFI to BMW exposed wifi network
- software was send from phone to car (but had to let motor running as else it switched off after a few minutes) (took like 30-40 minutes)
- then i could switch off the engine and the update got installed (another 15-20 minutes)
- then few hours to figure out how that 'android auto' worked from my Motorola smartphone (in the end it worked, even wireless)

Thanks guys. I’ve since downloaded it to my phone and it says it’s ready to go. Will do it the way you’ve suggested.

Thanks for the input guys, I didn't realise that the engine had to be running to transfer the files from the phone to the car....timings were around the same as Bart9140 said.
Clever stuff isn't it!!

I find it interesting that everyone seems to be getting version 07/2020.56 from the OTA update. My car was in getting the KAFAS camera replaced and my software was updated to 07/2020.60. I am curious as to what the slight revision is for?

....just a quickie, once you've downloaded the update files from your phone to the car there is about a 10 minute wait before your car informs you that the update is ready to start....I was sat there thinking I'd done something wrong!!

Any tips for getting my phone connected to the wifi? It keeps connecting and disconnecting so won't transfer the download. Oneplus6 Phone. Download in the car is at 14% and I'm not driving much at the moment so don't want to sit with it idling for hours just to download the rest.

im on version 07/2020.30 when checking for updates i get nothing, other people in my country are getting higher version numbers, so I think it doesnt push minor updates, there's probably some version log you can scroll through inside the car somewhere.

update, nevermind, just got it while doing my satnav update

Just started the update on my phone for my 1-series.
Is it easy to update the car from that then?
It easy easy just takes forever to send the update to your car. Then when it’s finished doing that you need to have 20mins spare where you can leave the car with the key in and not need to use it as it won’t start while it’s updating and you can’t lock it.
Yes you can.

You have to start the update, wait until it has started, then you can exit and lock. The alarm won’t arm and the iDrive will stay on.

Yeah I tried it remote to start and it was slow as hell. Downloaded to the app using home WiFi, was over a gb. Then next time got in car, told it to transfer then drove 20 mins to work and it was ready to install when I parked

Finally got mine downloaded and installed last week. First time driving since and spotify is much LESS reliable than before. Patchy playing tracks and takes its time to change between artists. A bit of a backward step really from where it was before

I like the voice command to lower windows. Apart from that, nothing else I've noticed so far

Not sure if I’ve got this wrong as don’t recall seeing it before. Since the update the green “side lights on symbol” is showing up on the dash. I always have the lights set at auto and daytime running lights at default setting but can’t recall seeing the green symbol before?
