All day test drive in September
Hard to see how you are going to be happy with a basic 918, however technically brilliant and fast it may be in the real world. When it's clear reading this thread and others that your heart is set on a GTS. Surely it's better to run around in bin sack, than buy the car you don't want.

Yes please! Hahah.
I too considered the 718 Boxster before getting my M40i. I've never driven one though. For similar money the only option was one of the 2 litre units so either the standard Boxster or the S, but then even the S is pushing £60k with decent options. You just can't spec them up to a similar level of that of the M40i with pretty much all of the option boxes ticked and be within £10k of each other. The other thing, that interior. It's too dated.
I'd imagine however though that all might be forgiven on a test drive.
When they get to refreshing the 718 to match the interior of the new 992 then I'm there!

The 718 Cayman S is actually a 2.5 and has 350bhp. Also, you really should look at residuals when comparing different makes.

I tried a couple of 718 2.0 Boxsters, I couldn't believe the engine noise when idling, it sounded really rough. At speed it wasn't much better. This issue has been mentioned and discussed on various forums.
The 718 GTS with the 2.5 engine however is a different matter, but then the price is a jump as well, and once the essential options are added it's heading to £70k and beyond.

John, I’ve got to say that’s quite a u turn, I certainly wasn’t expecting to see this as I thought you were against the engine, in particular the noise it creates.
My wife has the 718s, and I personally think they are wicked cars, look amazing pretty quick 4.4 -60mph still retain reasonable mpg when my wife drives, although for some reason if I take it out it shows 18-20mpg.
Either way I can’t see how you would be disappointed, we are now selling ours to move on to a 992 and ours looks to have gone up in value.
Fantastic cars, and imo looks more special than the latest g29.
Good luck either way

An interesting thread. In March my PCP ends on our Z4 and I am looking at my options. We have the 2.0 E89. It is a 14 plate with 31k on it. I have test driven the 718 Boxster last year and enjoyed the drive and whole Porsche feeling. I have loved our time in the Z and managed a 2500 mile round trip around Europe last summer in it. A great experience and one we wish to repeat. So , I have to find £7k to buy the Z outright or go get a secondhand 718 at around £40k. My thought process is suggesting, as we won’t be going anywhere abroad for a year or two due to this Virus, buy the Z and sit tight for a year to see where this virus thing goes. Driving a Porsche just around the Largely poor roads of the UK is not why I want an expensive toy.

That's gorgeous - what colour is that? Not one of the 'frozen' ones is it?

All day test drive in September
So, the next step in my future acquisition of a replacement car. I have an all day test drive booked on a new Z for Monday. The weather looks great so should be able to put a few miles on it and see how it feels. Could only get the 2.0 but that should give me an indication of the progress / evolution from ours to the new model. It will also try to get the salesman doing his job and get him to give me an idea of the costs of running and purchasing . I will do a comparison v the 718 and see if the costs outweigh the feelings..!
