New car - is this gap normal?

Post by PaperSniper » Mon Jul 27, 2020 8:00 pm

I've only had the 2020 Z4 M4.0i for a few days. Never paid attention to this when I bought the car. I should have.

Anyone know if the gap below is normal for these cars? I cannot find another 2020 Z4 to see how theirs is....any idea? BTW, the gap is on both sides. I have lowered and raised the top several times an all looks, feels and sounds normal. No binding or whatever.

Thanks!

Not sure I have the fold like that but the gap is the same according to the online ones.
I’ll have a look and see what it’s like on mine.

New car - is this gap normal?

Thanks for those photos. I can see the gap in some of the photos, but in others I cannot see it. I did another search on the 'net and found similar results. I can live with the gap if that's normal, I just want to be sure there is something "off" on my new car.

Thanks for taking the time to post all those photos. Wyldie.

You’re very welcome. I got back from my drive and checked mine. Looks exactly the same as yours, so I’d say all is well.

New car - is this gap normal?

Thanks very much. I'd found more photos on line earlier today with the gap than without. However, there are some without. One of those is below. I don't recall where I got that photo, I snipped it several months ago to add to my "exotic car" background slide show on my PC.

If there is a gap in this photo, I cannot see it. Maybe it was photo-edited out? In any event, I'm now fine with the gap back there knowing it's not some problem. Lord, but I am loving driving my car! 8)

I think that’s purely the angle of the photo and how the roof appears. There’s no other cover so it’s just how it is.
Glad you’re enjoying it! Happy motoring.

Yep, the gap is the norm - went and grabbed a photo but see Wyldie did the same.

The fold does look odd on ours like it’s creased/folded in the wrong place, mine is the same as Wyldie’s. Does yours always fold like that?

Glad you’re loving the car. I find myself using it more and more daily now as it’s so so good and my F30 is sitting on the drive neglected :D

I've had the car only about 4 days, but yes, the gap/crease is always there, and always looks the same. It's identical on both sides, which makes he concur it's how it was designed. I am really enjoying driving this thing!

My last convertible was a 2019 Miata RF I only owned for about 5 months. It was really fun to drive, especially since it had a manual transmission. My Previous convertible was a 1973 Spitfire. That car was nearly the same colour as my Z4.

PS - my spell checker indicates "colour" is mispelled!

I bought that spitfire in BRG in 1972 year model... we drove the wheels off of it. Very fond memories.

Yes it does look odd. Doesn’t seem to sit flat and the fold looks to be at a funny angle but that’s how it’s always been.
I’ve done the same. Got it out the garage yesterday and it can do a bit more out and about jaunts for the next few days. C Class is having a well earned rest. A mere 27 degrees predicted tomorrow and 31 on Friday, so is time for some roof down action.

Year, there is something about driving a 4-speed manual, 60 horsepower/70lbft torque engine! I can't remember my 0-60 times in that car, but I do remember how much fun I had. Of course, I was also 28 years old! How things change, eh?

That car reminds me that it was more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. The car you have now is quite a different story from the old Spitfire.

Honestly I think my 2010 3 liter E89 is everything we wished the little Triumph was
I see them pass through bring a trailer auctions and I think , hmmm? But no better to just own the memories.
