Software Updates
Hello,
So I told BMW that I was having problems with my 2019 Z4 M40i and some issues to do with the software.
I’d noticed the car was not remembering certain settings that were saved under the driver profiles and it was sporadic to say the least. Sometimes the seats would move to the saved position, sometimes not. Mirrors, interior light settings, folding mirrors, nav crashing and apple car play freezing.
I’d read a lot online on various BMW forums about the Idrive 7 system and lots were reporting the same problems and dealers not really knowing what they were doing in terms of rectifying it. I lead my dealer to these issues potentially being a software issue and a lot of the niggles would disappear with a newer version.
As of yesterday my car was running the original 07/2019 version. I spoke to the dealer in the Cotswolds where the car came from and they said that any system should be on at least 12/2019 by now.
I’ve got the car back from Vines of Guildford today and they have updated it to 03/2020.58. This is the latest version. They informed me it wouldn’t look any different and whilst driver profiles are stored in the cloud and were remembered, i had to re-save my seat settings.
I noticed the stereo sounded marginally better on my drive home. So all in all a success, if the gremlins are to stay at bay.
Got home, went through the system and looked at the installed apps and these had all disappeared. The weather widget, news widget had also vanished from the main menu. I called Guildford back and of course the techs had gone home. I’m waiting for a call back.
So, back to Google and it seems that lots of people are reporting this issue as well. Apps vanishing and the dealer not knowing what to do. Some people had noted a hard reset of the idrive would reinstate them.
I dont want to have to go over to the dealer again if I can help it so I decided to do a hard reset.
The system reset and the apps all reappeared and now in colour and with updated features that weren’t there before. I also have the Spotify app that wasn’t there before and the Caring Car programme. A bit of a gimmick but nice none the less.
It meant re pairing my phone and amending some of the settings under my profile but this was all done in under ten minutes.
Dare I say it, the HK is also sounding richer. I dont want to believe it and I’ll test this out some more this weekend.
So, if you’re having issues with Idrive then it maybe worth a trip to the dealer and remembering the above.
Here’s what I was left with and what I have now after the reset.

Thanks for the update It was interesting to hear your findings on the latest software upgrade and of the HK sound improvement, especially as my zed has software issues similar to yours. I will be contacting my dealer in the next couple of days to arrange to get my zed booked in.

You’re welcome. It’s worth a go to get them to update the software. Only time will tell if its cured all the glitches, but I feel it will.
Once yours has been updated, please let me know whether you notice any difference to the HK. I hope its not just me wanting it to sound better and tricking myself into thinking it’s improved.
I’d be interested to hear if your dealer is also insisting on the £15.00 sanitising fee.

Last week or so i needed to do an update via the BMW connect app.
Took a while (i even aborted it once as the car needed to stay on and the progressbar seemed like stuck at some percentage for 30 minutes)...in the end (after a few days) it looked updated (need to fix spotify app again as it lost my account apparently).
It seems i got updated to version 11/2019.70

Today faced major problems.
Do not know if it was related or not, but had opened the roof with the key (pressing open long time), 5 minutes later or so got into the car and:
-nav did not work anymore (could program destination but arrow did not move when driving)
-rear camera did not work
-no radio, nor spotify
The car did not recognize my profile and i was also not able to manually select it...it is to say, i could select it but could not login with it.
The car did start however and after a short visit to the garage to make an appointment, coming home i first closed the roof from within the car. 10 minutes later we got again in the car and magically all worked again ...it recognized my profile and all worked as usual.
Very strange...need to go back to the garage next Tuesday...hopefully they find something.

Garage updated my software to same version as mentioned above (03/2020.58.)...wait and see.
Advised me to not do it myself anymore via bmw connected app (which indeed took long time but seemed to have done the upgrade).

BMW connected app is useless at the moment. Doesn’t work and doesn’t update. Mine last refreshed in April and hasn’t done so since. It still says the car is unlocked with the boot open and windows down. Lots of reports of the app not working for most bmw cars, not just the Z4.

My car software was updated yesterday. The version installed is 2020/07.25 so that’s bang up to date.
The only changes I noticed so far is a tick box option to have the rear lights on as daytime running lights. Also, the option to have the steering wheel heating automatically come on when the outside temperature is below the preset value

What version were you coming from though Jim?
I’d seen the bit about the heated steering wheel but not the rear lights being DRL’s.
I had lots of changes and notable differences.

My previous version was 2019/07.39. Not had the time yet to find any other changes.

Hmm, there should be some other bits too then.
Now you just need some time to have a click through and find them.

Don’t think there is one. Perhaps its been mentioned on another forum so maybe worth a Google search.
