Stone chips

Post by Wyldie85 » Tue May 12, 2020 11:01 pm

Just wondered if you guys had picked up many or any stone chips in your ownership.
In owning the M40i since September last year, its covered a mere 1242 miles. Terrible, I know.
It has picked up three stone chips in that time, all on the bonnet.
Two have been touched in when it went for ceramic coating but after a wash last week, I’ve noticed another.
With the deep scooped front bumper, have you guys noticed any?
I know one member with frozen paintwork has PPF’d their car and I must say I’m contemplating doing the front. It seems destined to attract them.

Thoughts, ideas and observations welcome.

Stone chips

I had the bumper resprayed last year, as it was peppered after 70+ k miles. The bonnet is still relatively unscathed. One deep chip that's too close to the crease for any one to attempt a repair and a dozen other tiny specs, that I only notice when I wash her. All have been touched in over the years. but still not enough to warrant a respray.

Non MSport G29 here, no stone chips after 4K miles.

Did have a cracked windscreen at less than 1k miles.

Not noticed any on mine after 8k miles although I had a screen replaced after a lorry threw a stone at the screen and cracked it on the passenger side.

My previous 35iS had a few on the bonnet in it's 3 year life. I don't think the new model is more susceptible than other similar cars. My partners SL has gathered a few, although it much higher mileage.

I do wonder if the windscreen glass on BMW is very soft though. The last car' windscreen was peppered with scratches and chips after 2 years ownership. So much so I was considering getting the screen replaced so I could see clearly in low sun.

Mines covered 2700 miles, luckily I've only noticed one small stone chip on the passenger side front bumper, although I suspect that this might change once we are allowed to go out to drive again

Seems to be an issue with all models.
The joys of a low front end car.
Annoying, but not that noticeable on some colours.

Is it a colour thing?
My 335D is Melbourne Red and covered with stone chips on the bonnet. The wife's 220D is white, similar mileage on the same roads, and hardly any. Thinking maybe the red paint is softer?

Oh yes, on the theory that any stones from the car in front will still be up in the air as I whizz underneath 8)

One or two minor chips on the front and small one on the bonnet. Mileage 3200.

I was a little worried due to the Frozen Orange paintwork, but did invest in a Chipex Kit as with previous cars. I have to say it’s worked really well in covering the chips and they are no longer noticeable. Paint match is also good and the cleaning solution has not left any residue on the matte paint.

You want to try colour matching Orion silver paint work chips.
I keep touching in, polish, touching in, polish, getting there slowly.

First E89 i looked at was blue, i thought bonnet and windshield had been attacked with a shot gun.

Still not as bad as a X5 at a dealer with several dozen marker circles all over it highlighting the chips.

I fully intend to get out and drive it but I don’t want this to become a thing whereby I’m finding new chips and marks after every outing. It’s hardly been anywhere yet and to have three already, seems a lot.

Perhaps there’s something in the colour theory and the red shows them up. It’s my first ever red car, so perhaps just something to deal with.
