M40i Pops and Crackles
Had mine 4 months, enjoying it and zero problems so far. Spare time between Christmas and New Year so used my GoPro 7 from multiple onboard angles to put a vid together with a focus on sound. Intending to take mine on a skid pan at Thruxton for some sideways action soon.

Nicely made video ! It sounds decent! It’s often difficult to tell from a video, but have they managed a nice bit of rasp out of the exhaust note ? It doesn’t seem to sound as muted as a lot of the current turbos.

The disappointing and frustrating thing about modern auto, especially turbo cars obviously, is the lack of any drama on upshifts, all you get a is muted ‘Fluff’ on every change. The E89 35is will give a decent crack at approx over 4250k revs in comfort in manual shifting, it won’t do it in sport however or much over 5k revs so a very narrow window.... Even with mega bucks quality aftermarket exhausts you don't get any grin inducing cracks etc, upshifting, just a louder ‘Fluff’...
1st world problems admittedly but still, some bangs would be nice.

Nice video which has captured the exhaust crackles and pops very well . I love the sound that my exhaust makes, and I think that BMW have done a good job considering all the crap that they have to stuff in the boxes to comply with EU emissions, however as a comparison I find the Z4's exhaust very muffled when compared to the M Sport exhaust which was fitted to my M240i.

Interesting - my 35i does this in 'normal' drive as well, doesn't need to be in manual shift. Usually heard when cold, but not easily reproducible. Gave me a heck of a fright the first time, thought I'd broken somethingjohn-e89 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 6:38 pm The E89 35is will give a decent crack at approx over 4250k revs in comfort in manual shifting, it won’t do it in sport however or much over 5k revs so a very narrow window.... It does to an extent yes IF you can get it to upshift at the right moment, not easy in auto, in manual you can hold off a shift until the right time obviously but anyhoo, it’s a small window isn’t it and only in comfort mode, not ideal by any means.....enzed4 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 10:19 pmInteresting - my 35i does this in 'normal' drive as well, doesn't need to be in manual shift.
