Correct. The article does not say it looks crap. It says it looks gawky and nobody likes it, which is a much more desirable platform to launch a style sensitive product from

I see. So just because Top Gear says nobody likes it, it must be true. Highly dubious in my opinion.

To be honest when the original Z4 came out I thought it looked crap... grew on me though and ended up buying one.

I didn't say it was a good looker

but at least it does have a usp , unlike the new Z

I actually don't mind it too much... keep in mind internet forums are probably the worst place to establish positive feedback... especially for new cars. Most people buying the Z4 won't be as discerning / critical as forum members. My gut feeling is it performs well, has a nice cabin, and will sell quite a lot. Will it please the sort of folks who bought the original Z4, we'll have to see.

I doubt it will appeal to those who bought the original Z4. The E89 appealed to a different market and the G29 will be bought my a new clientele altogether. I doubt BMW are going to be too concerned by comments on a forum. As long as the car sells to its target market they will be happy enough.
