I saw one parked in the street in Munich a couple of weeks ago, still in the black and white camouflage and debadged. It actually looked pretty good to me and I’m not the biggest fan of convertibles.

Mmm, is that a Diablo in the background? Along with the Countach they are the only ones I like, and that is taking into account the time they existed in...

Your analogy to the dung beetle might not be too far off the designer thoughts....the Veyron was the most powerful car in the world, and in relation to it's size the dung beetle is not only the world's strongest insect – it's the world's strongest animal!

I've seen a few veyrons in person and they are amazing looking cars. I agree the very front isn't it's best angle, but every other design cue is on point.

Which is nicer, this rear or the new Z4...?

Hand on heart the Zed by a country mile.

One man’s junk etc... As I said the Zed isn’t anything at all special and I totally agree BMW could have done a much better job of its looks but it’s not hideous and I think the drive will change some minds. The F type has a ridiculous boot, no good for long weekends with surfing kit etc, 2nd hand 718’s...I can’t find one with enough kit, and new it’s £80k loaded, TT’s, hideous, they look like a Veyron, Merc’s, nice but the gearbox is too slow, so this Zed could be the perfect solution.

Personally think the new Z4 is a dog's dinner. It's been downhill since the E85/E86.

Fair enough, I guess each man like's a different flavour. I do think we can all presume the drive will be lovely, it's a new BMW, and they all drive well...much more refined than the previous models, definitely better as a daily driver, lot's a fake enhanced pops and crackles to make it sound sporty.

It's the new styling that doesn't sit with me. The black things on the front bumper look like a very late afterthought...it's like someone has just stuck them over the finished bumper. A real mess.

BMW's appetite for such a silly oversized grill puts all their new cars way out of proportion. The new grill on the M2 Comp ruins it, the 3 series looks a mess and the X5/7 are frankly a joke, like they were drinking whilst drawing the design. Is there a current BMW that looks better than it's Mercedes equivalent?

One comment summed it up quite well for me. It’s been “styled”, rather than “designed”. The fundamental shape is a bit of a lump and someone’s carved lots of fussy lines into it. Doesn’t look terrible, in my opinion - just disappointing and nondescript.

I hated the look of the E85/E86 when it came out. I still don’t think that the front looks very good, but the underlying shape is strong and opinionated and has aged really well. I liked the E89 design more at launch, despite the lardier arse, but then it soon became clear that it was aimed at a different brief, dynamically.
