First Sport model in the UK...?

Post by MrPT » Fri Sep 28, 2018 1:25 pm

I don't mind the look of it, it just doesn't have anywhere near the same conviction as the first Z4 design, which is a shame. Especially when there are some amazing cars like the Alpine and Type-R in the current market that have been really bold on the design front, clearly making concessions in terms of mass appeal in order to stir up some real passion in the customers they feel really matter.

I didn't like the E85/E86 design at the time either, but it has stood the test of time well and I think there's a strong argument to be made that this is due to its simplicity and clarity of design language. There are so many incoherent details on the G29 that stink of design-by-committee, e.g. the bonnet/front wing shut line that flows continuously in the E85 and the Pebble Beach concept, which was probably dropped as it would have needed a larger, more expensive clamshell or less aggressive headlights; the front bumper that has shrunk compared to the concept but has still kept a similar number of facets, making it appear cluttered; the heavily raked flank swage line that's clearly trying to make the car appear less slab-like, but ends up softening the signature Z4 rear arch "hips", an area that the concept tackles nicely with a bold box arch demarcated by an equally strong and distinct swage that runs around the rear light cluster. Etc etc...

This is the problem with concepts. They are good for generating excitement, but you shoot yourself in the foot if the execution of the final product is too heavily compromised.

Whilst on this topic, I thought I will post a reminder of where the story started for the E85 M back in 2006.

My 20 year old Daughter recently started a job as a BMW Product Genius. She's been there 3 weeks and got sent to Donnington yesterday on a training day. She text me to say it was learning about the new 3 series and the Z4.

She spent the afternoon on the track with the 2,0 3.0 and the M40i Z4. Lucky Girl

The black grill defo looks better, but that's the case on most cars because it's a bit more aggressive.

The interior looks like a fantastic place to be, but the whole thing feels much too refined for me.. the older Z's have a raw feel about them, simple dash, low level of detail and more sleek lines.

I get why it's like this though.. obviously the new Boxster is as high spec and fluffy as this.. but that just means I'd rather have the Boxster because it's better looking. (haven't done a price comparison.. guessing they're about 25% cost higher)

OMG... never, after watching this, will I ever consider lending my car for a BMW Z line up.

Was cringing watching the video when trying to start the Z8... with the wrong key... just like my wife with things... if it doesn’t work apply more violence, not logic, to make it work... hence why mine is banned from the Zed

BMW have really dropped the ball with this new car. Compared with the still beautiful looking both inside and out e89. Plus they have gone for a cheap ragtop instead of the totally superior folding hard top, presumably to try and increase profit margins.
From the side and rear it looks they tried to make a poor man's version of the AMG GT, and from the front it's just plain ugly.
No thanks!

More or less what the e85 owners said when that boring-looking, GT-cruiser with heavy folding hard top e89 was announced :P

Looks like I'll have to wait a couple of years for the new Supra to be in my price range before I seriously consider moving on from the Z4MC.

What an absolute pig of a car. I don’t think I’ll ever warm to the G29.
