Head-Up Display

How necessary or useful is the optional Head-Up Display likely to be, given the windscreen is pretty short and there's a 12.3” instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 10.25” screen in the centre... :? Overkill?

I had this on my Audi A7...very amusing, great toy but failed to see the benefit....especially as you will be spending all your time driving the idrive on the onboard TVs...

If you were flying a F18 as wingman with Tom Cruise and in intense air to air combat...maybe..

I have it in the X6 and find it pretty good. Its not anywhere near the pic that has been posted but it is an 8 year old car.
The things I like about it is the speed limit is shown for the road you are on and when using the satnav there is arrows and distances shown as well. There are other things shown on it but these are the bits I like.
Its very subtle even though its right in front of you and can be switched off.

I like the HUD . The current speed limit is displayed. This is very useful while travelling in Europe where I find that they don’t post the limits as frequently as in the UK

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

Didn’t think I’d be arsed about it but really like it in my X5.

I can see the benefits for business / daily driving. On a spirited run out I just want to see as much of the road as possible, no distractions.

It doesn’t really distract after a while even at night - if it did, theres always the option to turn the display off. I’ve never needed to yet.

You can adjust the brightness of the display also if needed.

I find that I very rarely look at the dash especially when driving these days with the HUD. You even get the information when changing music or radio station on there using the steering wheel so you can actually keep your eyes on the road.

I can live without it as none of my other cars have it but it’s a really nice thing to have when you do have it.

My first experience of a HUD was driving an i8, I really liked it. Keeps you focused on the road.

We have the after-market vision fitted to our 330d. It is not quite as good as the original equipment one and comes in the form of a little pop up screen. I find it very convenient and it keeps your eyes on the road. When buying future cars I will be looking to have this feature.
