G29 Z4 prototype review

Post by R60BBA » Thu Jun 07, 2018 12:08 am

I saw a few of them on the Ring in Germany. They’re definitely quick and will easily sell, especially the Z4 40i at just under £40,000. I presume the M model will be around the £50,000 mark like the M2.

If the Z4M has the new M2 Competition engine that would be a cracker!

Not a fan of manufactures phasing out the manual gearbox though :?

Here’s the Z4 Concept that I saw at the BMW Museum in Munich.

I'm interested to see if the production version keeps those curved humps behind the roll hoops - its a lovely feature, but I'm not convinced they will survive the mechanics of raising and lowering the roof.
EDIT: just noticed the camouflaged test car doesn't have them so obviously another case of a photo-type bearing little or no resemblance to the production car

I predict it being head to head, with nothing in it with the F type, but both just a tiny bit shy of a Boxster in ultimate handling, but not shy enough to stop it being hard to choose one of the three. Certainly will be interesting to see it un-wrapped but going on the test vids driving wise it seems it’s going to be a superb car. If the interior is better than the Jags that could sway some buyers I would think, plus the Porkers are never going to look as nice.

Tough call.....nice dilemma to have if you’re in the position... :driving:
M roady...OEM CSL’s, strut brace, Remus back boxes, ZHP
MR2 MK 2
E89 35i project car...mapped 365bhp, M4 stoppers & wheels, KWV3’s, H&R front ARB, M3 front arms, strut brace Eisenmann cat back race exhaust, VRSF downpipes inbound

I thought I had read that the Jag was not very nimble and more like the E89 which would mean the new Z will need to have much better handling than the Jag to be closer to the Boxster.

Then I would be very interested in the new Supra in that case

From what I’ve read and reviews watched the Jag is close to the Boxster, a very very capable proper sports car, I nearly bought one before the porker although admittedly I haven’t tried one yet, had to scratch the porker itch first. I guess it depends on who has written it, only way to really find out is try one.

It may actually have been on here somewhere that I read it with someone saying it was a cruiser and not a sports car.

Ex mod CJeeper has one, if he reads this it’d be good to read his thoughts.

BMW may want to keep the UK base price sub-£40k to avoid the £350/year additional road tax... although that may mean that the options list is a bit more 'extensive'....

Would this then mean in a few years the market is flooded with cars without options a lot of buyers would want and sellers cant get rid of them?
Or will it be the opposite with most things included as standard.

Are we sure on that?

Seems to be quite a bit of talk of a full fat ///M on the web.
