Tom’s train goes over the edge

Post by john-e89 » Fri Aug 20, 2021 10:07 pm

This superb pic was taken tonight by a Stoney Middleton in Derbyshire, local of the train in Tom Cruise’s latest Mission impossible film going over the edge in Darlton quarry where I used to work as a fitter back in the day, the quarry is now abandoned but the set has been months in the making, some great footage of the train will no doubt appear on YouTube over the next few days. It’s been a big boost to local tourism, not that it really needed it, but nice that a mega budget Hollywood blockbuster had some part in our little sleepy backwater.

Great pic. Reminds me of the last back to the future film. Great for the local economy to boot

Crazy busy today James, a few other local abandoned quarries were opened for cars to park as so many folk went walking to watch the event. The chip shops around will be having turkey this year for sure…!

Yep full size and blowing steam, no miniatures used here Pondrew. There have been cranes in the quarry for months building the ramp and digging out the quarry floor for the water pit that the train hits.

Where did the train come from; did they build it from scratch? My old grandad would be turning in his grave seeing that for no good reason :)

No idea tbh, I’d imagine built for the film.

It's just clicked. That's why that short-arsed weirdo was at the British GP; he was filming about an hour away and got a nice little fee for turning up.

Great photo. the train definitely looks like a model. Full scale or not. It appears to have a number of cameras attached to it on out riggers. Should make for a great clip in the movie.

Blimey that will have been spectaular, though I wonder how the script develops the scene where a steam train falls off a cliff?

Strange thing that even though it is real, it looks like a real poor photoshop effort

Apparently the scene is going to be as though its in the Alps, they borrowed a load of pine trees from Chatsworth which were at the quarry floor.
