It was a full size prop, built specially for the film (7 figure sum apparently). It had a lorry type diesel engine of some sort in the tender so that it could move itself, but for the scenes filmed earlier in the year, when it was filmed with Mr Cruise hanging off the front of it in Yorkshire, it and the carriages / wagons it was "hauling" were shoved around by a diesel loco.

All the smoke / steam, were effects only. Its design was based on a British Railways Britannia clas loco, modified to look more like a European loco. No idea why they didn't just build a copy of a European loco!

I'll get my anorak now.
