Couldn't he afford a left handed one on account of all the drugs he was doing?
In those days and when he first started playing left handed guitars were a special order and more expensive so he just used a standard right hander upside down. Think there was also something that his father didn't like him playing left handed so he played right handed when his father was around and left handed when he wasn't and carried on left handed later in years. He could play both ways, no mean feat
For me the fact that he played an "upside-down" guitar just makes what he achieved even more impressive.
