A peerless piece of engineering and compact packaging. I could ferry all three kids around, or the wife and luggage for a week, but not both. Easy to chuck a mountain bike and gear in the back. Fast, economical, reliable, great handling, never got stuck in the snow and could fit in a supermarket parking space with room to spare.

Only had two cars since, Toyota GT86 and my Z4.
Zedebee, I see your post and I raise you this:
2006 - an Audi TT 225 Quattro, which I owned for five years and racked up 60,000 miles. MOT history shows it’s still going (much to my surprise). A peerless piece of shite and compact packaging. I moved a girlfriend from Edinburgh to London in it and could fit either her or all her possessions in the back, but not both. Rarely could I drive it without something breaking or falling off. Not that fast; not that economical; utterly and completely unreliable; awful handling with understeer on top of understeer; useless brakes; devoid of any feedback; rubbish in snow (on summer tyres with 2mm tread); but a really rather nice place to wait for the AA patrol tow truck!

I’ve owned many cars before and since but none have come close to being as unreliable. In my ownership, the warranty payments for repairs exceeded the purchase price of the car!
 to be fair before that I had an Avensis estate, so the TT seemed quite outstanding to me. It was very reliable though, only went wrong once in ten years of ownership, with a failed starter motor. Apart from that, it was good. However, when I first got in a GT86 it was amazingly fun and responsive, so the Audi probably was quite wooden in comparison.
My other car at that time was my Westfield (which I still own). The TT had an easy task being more practical and refined, but a very hard task matching any of its driving qualities :D

Not a fan of the TT then, no? Why did you keep it for five years; are you a masochist? :D
When it was working, for normal use it was a great car. My mistake was thinking it was a sports car rather than a fashion accessory :D
I knew that my next car was going to be a Z4MC (or a Cayman S) so I kept the TT until I had the cash to get what I really wanted.

I was driving a Ski Nautique in Corfu as I was working as a waterski instructor at the time.
Not my boat but the one I drove was exactly the same

Loved the 100nx, did it have the taga roof?
More of a T-Top with 2 x targa style glass roof panels. One of the most asked about cars on a petrol forecourt I’ve owned - even back then. Think it was nicknamed ‘the egg’. Mine was black but I lusted after a white one. Two roof panels unlocked and lifted out into T-Top mode.

Perfect. Our first car, after cycling every where until I was 27, was a Nissan Cheery 1.3. Just after we bought it the 100nx came out and I remember like it was yesterday, walking through Fareham shopping centre and there was one on display. Sooo wanted to go by one, but other priorities back in those days. :)

I do remember lusting over the M display at the Paris motor show around that time so I suppose it had to happen eventually.

Current Z4 coupe is a 2006 car so that would leaving me driving mk2 Golfs (more than one). Mostly the below Atlas grey big bumper 16v. I still have all the running gear and subframes for the last iteration of that car and I will have another at some point to recreate it. The Mk2 Golf was a great car to look at and drive.

I'm terribly embarrassed to say I was driving this shed of a Ka, having recently sold my first Z4 to help buy a house. I remember the window wouldn't wind up or down and one spark plug hole thread was stripped so the plug was wedged in with ptfe tape

I was driving a 1988 Fiero GT (a car you chaps across the pond won't be too familiar with). Excellent handling, around 2700 lbs. and a V6 which in my case I had increased to 300 bhp. 0-60 in 4.5 secs. and 1/4 mile in 13 and a tad almost brought it into the first decade of the 21st century according to performance.

Had owned it for 20 years and was looking for a Z4m coupe but none were available, so I bought a Pontiac Solstice coupe (mine was 375 bhp/375Tq) and faster than the Fiero, which I sold after awhile.

Found my Z4MC about 5 years later and still have it and the Solstice.

Extra points if you can identify the cars in the background,

Supercharger fitted by me on the driveway, it was making about 30bhp more than standard, surprised quite a few cars with it.
