Private plates.

Post by afennell » Thu Apr 15, 2021 5:13 pm

Hello,

looking into purchasing a private plate, ive seen one i like but its never been issued.
Nationalnumbers have said they can request the plate released into auction but they charge £250 for this.

Am i right in thinking i pay this fee even if i dont win the plate, so i could be out bidded but still have to pay the £250?

Correct. It's a gamble.

You could always ask DVLA if they've got plans to put it into a future auction.

However, some will simply never be released due to what they could be interpreted to be saying - e.g. CU69NTS :P

If it's not been issued by the DVLA, I would go straight to the DVLA and ask them what the process is.
I checked online with the company you mentioned for the next in sequence plate to the one I just bought direct from DVLA. It is £68.50 more from them than direct from DVLA inclusive of fees. Therefore for a £250 plate, their fees are £68.50.

I contacted the DVLA directly twice about a similar thing and first time it was a simple answer, the plate I was interested in there was no intention to release it anytime soon but they took my email and said I’d be notified if it was going to be released to auction

Second time I got to buy the plate there and then and did.

The main difference I could see was the first one “could read as something” so I think was maybe flagged as an auction plate on their system. The second time it was just initials so probably not flagged and could go for general sale.

All these plate companies do is go to the DVLA and add a margin for the pleasure, just check out a load of plates on any of these sites and some will be on the DVLA for considerably less :(

Email DVLA directly. All you’re doing involving NationalNumbers is paying them a fee for something you can do yourself. A few years ago I did the same thing and at the time DVLA didn’t make it easy to find the right form on their website but eventually I did and if memory serves I think I stated that I would bid should it go to one of their (DVLA) online timed auctions. Luckily I ended up with the winning bid but it’s a gamble as once you’ve requested its release then there’s a chance someone could outbid you after doing all the leg work :(

I did the same thing. Emailed DVLA and they took my details and entered it into the next auction, notifying me so I could bid on it.
As it happens it went for crazy money and I gave up, but the process of getting it out there for auction was simple.

I too asked a company if they could do it. They take the fee for doing that regardless of whether you buy it or not. You tell them your limit and they bid on your behalf. If you buy it, they add on their transaction charges PLUS the fee for getting it into the auction.
It really isn't worth the outlay.

Always happy to help if I can.

If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!
