Fun 4 seater convertible up to circa £14k ish

Post by True-Blue » Fri Mar 12, 2021 8:28 pm

I’m considering a 4 seater convertible, it’s a long story but I might need something enjoyable but more practical than Z4 as a weekend / toy car.

Priorities would be;

Needs to seat 4 in reasonable comfort
Needs to be quick-ish, so a fast turbo diesel not off the agenda - but it wouldn’t be going anywhere near a track
Preferably within the £330 pa road tax bracket
Something relatively reliable!

Any thoughts :?

EDIT : So the E89 has gone and the I’m now actively looking for a 4 seater convertible, upped the budget a bit to circa £14k - my man maths is that I was going to go for the B12 kit on the E89 and possible go for a custom rolling road remap, so As I’m not doing that consider spending a touch more on the replacement.

330d convertible would fit your requirements as long as you can live with the boot space with the roof down

I'm seriously considering lending my Z to my parents for a year or two and getting an XKR (X150). Although they've four seats the rears only work for younger children.

330d or an A5 of some type would be on my list of options.

Maybe a mere e class or Volvo as an outside bet.

You’re almost in the realms of a 2 series convertible, there’s a lovely 228i MSport on autotrader at £15k, can’t think of a four seater convertible that’s more fun for the price

Probably in place of the Zed, plan was for the Mrs and I to use the Zed for long weekend breaks together. However, it seems time is sadly now our most limited asset, so might need a more family friendly fun car.

Haven’t decided anything yet, mulling things over.

    Thanks for the input,

Much prefer the old A4’s to A5’s, 330D’s not a bad shout...

Just a thought, but if it's going to be a weekend/toy car why get a 330d?

A 330i or 335i might be a bit more fun and will definitely sound better when the roof is down!

Still it's a shame your Z4 may have to go - you've been through them at quite a rate.

Mates got a 6 series and it is a pretty special place to be - 635d looks good but styling not to everyones taste but a lot of car for the money and a BMW of course... very sorry to hear about this enforced change of plan Martin. Best wishes

Time and who you spend it with is the most important thing not what you spend it in

My shout would be a 6 series, plenty of room with 4 up and some really nice ones knocking around at what seems reasonable money. Since it’s your fun/weekend car definitely a petrol. If you fancy a change an Audi S4 would be the other option I’d consider :driving:

I might just sit on the Zed, had stuff going on for a while and my partner did encourage me to buy the current car, but can’t see it getting much use for the intended purpose.

Does the 335i not share the same engine as the 35is? In any case, I think the 335i has many engine issues from what I’ve read?

Sorry to hear that Martin and makes my first sentence even more relevant, time is the one thing you can’t get back. Get something that suits your current situation and needs ASAP and enjoy it as much as you possibly can.

      All the best Andy
