Selling cars / retaining private plate during CV19

Post by mr wilks » Sat Jun 06, 2020 10:16 am

1) Has anyone retained a plate online in the last 2-10 weeks & if so did the new logbook arrive as it would have pre CV19 ? ( was usually within 7 days)
I do know the paper retention system isn't currently working as DVLA Swansea are not staffed .

2) Once car ownership is transferred online has anyone received a new logbook through post as pre CV19 ? ( usually within 7 days )

I sold a car on a Friday (08/05) and did the online transfer of ownership and new owner had V5 Thursday morning.

Plate was already off the car pre Covid so don’t know about that.

After recently purchasing a Zed (last two weeks) and going through all the new ownership, private plate transfer etc I must say DVLA are on the ball with returning the paperwork. Very quick = Very impressed

Two weeks ago we had a family shuffle of car ownerships - daily hacks to kids and one of their cars onto sorn as a classic. Entered the changes online and got the new V5C's and refunded tax after a few days.

I thought the seller was supposed to sort all the paperwork these days?
Buyer just takes the 'new owner' tear off slip?

Seems either seller or buyer can register the transfer online, if the V5 has not already been posted.

Thanks for replies , daughter is hoping to buy a Mini this week but the seller hasn't retained his plate , didn't want her paying a deposit then the new logbook doesn't arrive for months .
I tried to retain my own plate online but wouldn't process so paper application needed but DVLA website states not to post them anything right now due to CV19 , clearly the online system is working as usual

Oh yeah, of course, I was just thinking of the paper way.
