Thanks for letting me in on the story of the Roman numerals. I can understand your tools rattling about. Bollington near Macclesfield where I lived is only about 8 miles from Woodford and as the took off came over my house. The house was a 2 bedroom bungalow and not wonderfully built but only cost me £3150 in the sixties. When the Vulcan came over the whole house shook. Amazingly they still appear to be standing but now cost a little more!enuff_zed wrote: ↑Sat Jul 13, 2019 1:36 pm Good photos Tinker.
I was on 617 Sqn back in the late 80s when they were based at Marham. The Vulcan used to do its display practice over our squadron site.
I vividly remember sitting on the wing of a Tornado in a HAS (Hardened Aircraft Shelter) when the Vulcan did its max rate climb over the top. This was in the days of the RAF still operating it, so it was not restricted in any way. I couldn't even hear myself think, and all my tools rattled along the wing and onto the floor!
Out of interest, the Typhoon is from 29 Sqn, the Operational Conversion Unit, which my lad is on.
Not sure if you've heard the story but as you can see it has the roman numerals for 30 on the fin, not 29.
Many years ago, a painter was told to go and paint 29 in roman numerals on one of their aircraft. Not being the brightest spark, he asked how to do that?
Easy, came the reply; 2 X's, one, X.
So out he went and painted 2 X's and one X.
And so a tradition was born.

I was near the Shuttleworth collection at Old Warden Bedfordshire last year and one evening heard “that” noise 3x Merlins - in two Hurricanes and a Spitfire flying only two hundred feet wing abreast over my deck chair in the guest house garden. What a picture.

Surely not Lancaster bombers? Thought they were pretty rare these days

Fantastic photos Mr Bear
Last weekend we had 10 red arrows go straight over our driveway, very low. That was a nice surprise. They must have been going to/coming from an airshow somewhere?
Also had a lot of military helicopters flying low over the garden the past week. Usually we get the Chinook flying past in a group, but these were the proper ones with guns and all sorts. Very cool!
The best one was when we were visiting a castle on Loch Ness (Urquhart Castle) and whilst we were enjoying the ruins, we heard and then saw 2 fighter jets absolutely bombing it past us. The noise was incredible and something I'll never forget
