Apple Watch

Post by ronk » Sat Jun 01, 2019 2:40 pm

I’m contemplating buying an Apple Watch - are they worth having or nothing more than a novelty? I have a decent Omega Seamaster which I wear on a daily basis, so I’m at the unsure if I should stage !

If I do buy, which one do I go for ?

All depends really. Personally I use mine for the alerts mainly. Would often miss text messages and email when they were on my phone if the phone was on the desk or in my jacket/bag. With the watch I never miss them anymore. Also great for cancelling alarms on your phone etc.

I also use the fitness tracker, although there are plenty of other watches that do that.

Other than that there's really not a great deal going on with the watch... 99% of things are better viewed on the phone, hence the lack of decent apps.

Oh, the other cool thing is controlling music/podcasts from the watch without needing to take your phone out.

I'd go for the latest one, although don't see the need for the SIM version, especially as they bump up the cost of your contract to add the watch, you can't just share it.

I feel your apprehension, do you want a watch that does lots of things or a piece of precision engineered jewellery that tells the time. When the Rose gold galaxy came out I pre-ordered and listed my Speedmaster on eBay because I don’t need three watches. When the Galaxy arrived I was pretty disappointed in that the display isn’t always on (so it looked like a proper watch) and sent it back and kept the Speedmaster. So now I have a Fitbit Alta in a stainless bangle on my left wrist and a watch on my right

Thanks, that’s helpful info - I’ve been looking at the Apple 4 Version.
The ecg thing appeals to me as i had some heart surgery a couple of years ago - I’m sure it’s ok - the surgeon said so but a weather eye won’t do any harm ( I’m nor paranoid about it)

Can I ask if you find the daily battery life ok?

I have the original series 0 from 2015 when it first came out, I went for the Stainless version because the glass is crystal. I wear it every day and charge every night. it still looks good with no scratches on the glass and the battery life is still pretty good, take it off charge at 0700 and is down to 10% by about 2300. Really can't fault it except for the depreciation in value but that's what happens with tech.

I bought mine because of the heart monitoring functions. Like you I had heart surgery a couple of years ago. It monitors your hear rhythm and warns you if there are any irregularities, as well as offering the ECG facility. There is quite a range of health safety features on the Applewatch 4. It can contact emergency services if you have a fall giving them your location. I wear mine at night, just in case! It would be worth discussing what it can do with an Apple retailer or if you live near one or one of the Apple stores even better. I bought mine from the Apple store on MeadowHall and they set it all up for me. Battery life depends on how much you use the range of functions. You can extend it by turning some things off in ‘settings’. For instance it will automatically show the time when you move your wrist. It is possible to turn this feature off so that you need to tap the screen to wake it up and show the time. Mine lasts a couple of days with everything switched on. A friend of mine who switches the automatic time feature off reckons he can go over three days before recharging.
I am very happy with my watch so far. It offers a little bit more peace of mind.

I’ve got an official Apple reseller in town and they are offering 0% finance - i don’t normally use credit but it would be rude not to!

If you have an iPhone then they are really good. Like you I have sea master but wanted to know about health /alerts etc , looked at other better looking techs watches and on viewing a Michael kors in the states the salesman said it’s s no brainer , iPhone is best with Apple Watch. They look quite good with the chain mail strap as well but not as good as a bespoke watch, trouble is it’s so good I don’t wear my sea master unless on holiday now. Only downside is glass face marks really easily so cover ASAP if you get one

So you get the health stuff which you can share with other iPhone users. Control music videos, think you can use Apple Pay on it. Get and send texts ,can do maps. An start my jag off it. I’m sure there’s loads more good and rubbish apps

Indeed, all these complicated car things... why don’t we just walk everywhere or buy a horse? ;)

Well, as Danny Driscoll said nowt wrong with a horse s**t sandwich, plus it’s good for yer roses.... :P

Took the lad and a couple of his mates bowling for his 12th d’day last night to one of these big complex places, all flashing arcade machines, lots of noise and youth ‘music’, very loose term...., then to Chiquito’s Mexican diner.... Got home, lad went to his mates for a sleepover and wifey and I sat in the garden with a bottle.....or two....and watched the night close in....birds singing at roosting, cats killing each other...was a very pleasant few hours after the horror of the previous few....

Went inside and posted that at gone 11 and slightly :dizzy: :drinkwine:

Much prefer the quiet life tbh....(As long as sports cars are involved...)

I bought a Hauwei watch to go with my phone and the novelty wore off after the first couple of days charging the thing, plus I didn't want the Chinese Government watching me sitting on the bog. I think as I'm a watch enthusiast to me they aren't really watches but a throw away item and just another unessasary thing in life. Mines gathering dust now. I can see the plusses for heart monitoring although you would need that for the the extra stress with the thing buzzing away on your wrist all the time.

Tim.
