UK driving licence in EU after Brexit

Post by bladeowner » Sat Mar 02, 2019 12:51 am

I had an email from my zed insurer (esure) last week offering a green card in the event of a no deal Brexit. My motorbike is insured through Bennetts and so as i'm going to France an Belgium mid April I emailed them to ask the question about green cards. The response was 'We currently do not issue Green Cards as all of our policies provide 90 days cover within the territorial limits of the policy'
I replied I knew I was covered but I was asking about a green card in the event of a no deal Brexit.
They replied they are a broker and wouldn't supply green cards.
As most people insure their vehicles through brokers I took this to mean they a) hadn't thought about it b) couldn't be arsed c) or both.

Well LV have so far been very quiet, though previously noticed this year I get 180 continuous EU days cover (last year was 30 days)

Insurance is also Comprehensive in the EU, not 3rd party though being class 1 business use may have something to do with it.

The reverse side of my certificate says that this acts as a green card - so along with that and my V5 I will probably only need an IDP?
Oh and plenty Euro in the wallet!

Interesting thread: I live in Ireland and coming over to the UK for the North Wales run and the NC500 in April and May respectively...it looks like we too would need a green card when driving in the UK.

Will ask my insurer for one / clarifications

Remember it well and always amused me that they came about so the Germans could identify the French national vehicles in WW2. Amazingly they kept going with it into the 1990's.

I phoned Footman James, and they will post me Green Cards 30 days before my two planned trips. I have two cars on the policy, with each one doing one of the trips, so two separate Green Cards.
I also collected an IDP from the post office last week. I now have a folded piece of card with all the info from my plastic driving licence transcribed onto it by hand. It does have nice rubber stamps all over it so it looks nice.

How do you get one of those?
- any local post office
- bring one recent photograph
- your current driving licence
- £5.50
- hand written out on the spot with 10 minutes of your time

& Bob’s your uncle... looks like a WW1 ration card, progress egh

Additionally LV are now advising Green Cards will be required on their policies despite saying cover in EU & will take 14 days via their website. However in an emergency they can push via 1st class post.

Well when the EU tell our Mrs. May to take a long jump off a short pier today & refuse to extend, the EU rozzers will be on every UK registered car closer than sh#t on toilet paper when we crash out, checking all documents are in order.

Am expecting any that aren’t to be impounded & fines handed out..

Yes! Also looks like you nearly have enough stamps for a new toaster. :D
