Lovely story about man tending a memorial

Post by firebobby » Sat Jan 05, 2019 10:20 am

I read this yesterday and see it was on the news this morning. It's about a man who as a boy witnessed a flying fortress crash in 1944, a very touching and sad story and I really hope he gets his wish.

Yes that makes you think. Quite but powerful statement by one individual, who's life was preserved by the courage and principals of a pilot and crew who never knew him.

Yes, I saw the reports on BBC News - really touching story.

Very touching, so many sacrifices of which so many are lost.

+1 for his modest request

Plenty of USAF aircraft in this country so why don't they offer to do a flypast? :?

Would be great for Sally B, the B-17 based at Duxford, to get involved. However, I imagine she will still be being serviced in Feb to be ready for the airshow season. Great dedication by the man though

Well he got his wish, Tony Foulds got the flypast he had prayed for and was joined by thousands of well wishers. what a fantastic turn out.
That old fella did those brave lads proud, it brought tears to my eyes

It would have been magical if the Sally B could have flown, but the Dakota made up for it :)
Well done that man

I see there's a campaign to have Tony awarded an MBE or similar, I hope he gets one, he certainly deserves it.

Yes, he deserves some sort of award for his dedication.

I watched the BBC coverage yesterday morning and it certainly brought a lump to my throat. I'm so pleased that he got his flypast. :D

Possibly also because my Dad often talked about his cousin who was in the Canadian Air Force and based here as a Navigator in a Lancaster. Sadly he went missing in 1944, but I met his brother when I went to Canada in 1977. He was also in the RCAF, but stayed in Canada training pilots.

Wow... my late uncle was also in the Royal Canadian Air Force flying Wellington bombers... lost bombing Messina, no known grave, memorial in Malta that I’ve had the good fortune to visit.

My dad sent lots of his eldest brothers photos both before & during the war to the Canadian High Commission & it’s now on display in Canada, including a copy of the one below which proudly hangs at home.
