Recommendations for roller garage door

Post by Sararom » Fri Dec 21, 2018 1:22 pm

I'm having a garage built and among things needed is a roller door. I'm in west London if anyone can recommend a brand or fitter. I'v seen a few posts about auto-roll but not sure on the motors they use.

Second up is do I plaster the garage or not as I don't work on my own cars yet it's not attached to the house? It's brick and block, will be 5*6m https://mechanicguides.com/best-garage-door-rollers/ and will store my car and have some sports equipment up, im thinking to put a spare 50"" pioneer I've now got surplus to requirements from the house and maybe a small sofa.

Am i getting carried away?

If possible go for a sectional door rather than roller. They're quieter, more secure and also warmer as you can take the insulated option. Look at Horman too which is the market leader. I've had a Horman door and Marantec motor for 20 years without a fault

Don't plaster the walls, just paint the con blocks if you want to go posh. Plaster in unheated buildings retains moisture from the atmosphere and will make the garage smell damp as well as make it a more humid environment in which you keep your car and tools etc.

Paint the blocks. You can still put a telly and sofa in there, just get yourself an oil filled radiator for the colder months.

My old garage was always cold even in the height of summer. It was actually nice to go in there on a hot and humid evening and just enjoy the coolness 8)

Just curious - why is sectional more secure vs roller?

We had a Carrera roller door before mrs gannet's car took a trip into it :o insurance company replaced it with a make I don't know off the top of my head. To be honest I cant tell the difference other than the control unit...

If your building it, maybe worth putting a coil of 15mm plastic piping into the screed. You could always put a small under floor heating manifold on to it and connect it to the heating system. Keep the garage nice and toasty for the Zed :fuelfire: :fuelfire:

For what a coil of pipe would cost it's well worth it just to have the option at a later date.

I’ve just fitted a thermal sectional door to my garage, which offers far more insulation than a roller

Looks far better than a roller door especially as it’s on a detached garage adjacent to the house in full view of the road .., far more kerb appeal than a roller

I’m led to believe that the way they are secured and move makes them harder to force than a roller

The way it goes up and down on the electric motor is sublime and silent

Can't help with door recommendations, but if you are going to have a TV and a sofa you will definitely need a beer fridge!

Place was built before we bought it & came with these doors & electrics from an Italien firm - pic of plate on door motor.

They’re sectional & as recommended above, certainly far more solid / thick / insulative than most garage doors - one of the best garage doors I’ve ever seen.
