Second car dilemma - sell or keep?

Post by flimper » Sun Dec 16, 2018 1:11 pm

Bit of help please guys, I have an 04 Mini Cooper as a 2nd car and don't know what do with it. At the moment I don't need a 2nd car but that could change with job requirements.

Value of car: £1k
Mileage: 122,000

Work done:
Radiator & Alternator £340 03/16
PAS Pump & Exhaust Brackets £450 11/16
2x Gear Selector Cables £280 11/18
4x non runflat tyres £320 11/18

Work required:
New clutch £900
Brakes £400
Exhaust (rusty but ok for a while)

Insurance due next week, cost £300

I should add I don't relish the thought of the hassle of selling.

Thanks for any advice

So you will ned to spend more on the car just to make it drivable than it is worth? Sell it, keep the grand and buy another car if or when you require it.

Sell the car. Just pick something up from an auction when you need one next.

Second car dilemma - sell or keep?

I was i this situation with my ten year old Disco 3 I’d had from new. The impending bills were going to be about £2k (Tax/ Insurance/ Tyres/ wheel refurb/ service / ball joint ) and even tho very low mileage, it wouldn’t be worth any more trading it in after spending the dosh.
I traded it in so I I’m left with one car between my wife and I during the winter months but I survive!

The money saved more than covers the cost of a taxis if really stuck

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

Second car dilemma - sell or keep?

Surely this is a very personal question?

Either you have no use for a second car - in which case, sell sell sell.

OR you get some utility from a second car (can fit big stuff in it, better on fuel, more fun, fit more people, handy to have another if yours is broken etc) - in which case you need to work out how much that utility is worth.

I have two large dogs and have always wanted a convertible. I can't see a way around having two cars, irrespective of what that might cost.

As things stand it's nice to have a 2nd car for trips to the shops etc but no real need as such. Thanks for opinions, have made a start on getting it sold

Given the impending costs selling it would seem to make sense - as others have said if a 2nd car becomes a necessity you can always find another one.

Although it is handy to have a daily for going to the tip, DIY stores, supermarkets, etc. it isn't worth spending too much to have one.

GLWTS.

£900 for a clutch :o

Just changed the clutch on the mrs 05 mini. Cost me £150

Get another price Mark, £400-500 would be a lot nearer I would think.

Write it off. Save 500 notes or so and keep bouncing around sheds until they break.

Our old mini cooper r56 needed a clutch after the crank seal went. It was roughly an £800 job as the engine had to come out after removing most of the front end.
