Insurance and SP30

Post by dr_john » Tue Oct 02, 2018 11:08 am

I'm taking delivery of a Porsche Boxster GTS next month and have been looking for insurance quotes for my wife and I.

Looking on the comparison sites I was staggered to find that my wife's 2 year old SP30 speeding conviction (49mph in a 40 limit, 3 points) bumps the premium up from around £450 to £600 ie about 33%. We are both in our early 70's if that makes any difference.

I'm just looking for the experiences others have had with the effect of SP30's on insurance, we have both had the odd SP30 in the past and it has always made little or no effect on insurance cost.

I had similar with Admiral, I don't use them now. Comparison sites don't like it when you mess around adding and removing things like speeding convictions, it has an impact on the premiums they offer.

It totally depends on the insurer, always better to call them direct :)

Admiral loaded mine this year, although they hadn't made a fuss in the past for my 3 SP30s. I went with Adrian Flux this time, half the price Admiral wanted to steal.

Early 90’s (yup, ages ago) I started to use the NFU & had 2 vehicle’s with them, one a 4x4 the other a 16v Golf GTi.

The 1 instance my ex had to claim, they were brilliant...

However, think it was about 2004/2005... my premiums suddenly went through the roof, literally - knew the agent quite well & it all came down to the underwriters not wanting to insure certain cars & certain professions... & the simplest way to remove you from their books is to hike your renewal premium, big time...

I've had renewal premiums go through the roof in the past, I just move to someone else and that fixes it. BMW insurance were really good for 2 or 3 years and then suddenly increased out of sight.

I've had a bad experience with Admiral in the past. My current insurers, LVE, want £777 for the Porsche, I can do better than that.

The Porsche dealer recommended NFU, he said lots of his customers use them so I'll try them nearer the time. Must be lots of Porsche driving farmers I guess :)

It’s because all those things that used to be included in the base premium (e.g. legal cover, £0 windscreen excess, courtesy car, commuting, driving other cars, minor speeding offenences, etc.) have gradually been removed to give customers the cheapest price (that’s what we keep asking for isn’t it) to compare between insurers.

So if you now need to add one of those it ‘magically’ increases the premium, whilst keeping their ‘base’ premiums looking competitive.

Mine never went up when I had a couple of SP30, and didn’t really increase when I had my £15k claim, but that’s probably due to shopping around for a week every year.

Did you try multicar with admiral? Internally it’s treated as “new business”, even if you have an existing policy with them, so the incentives to discount are very high. They will also pro rata the insurance for your existing car to align it with the new policy.

That said, I’ve also noticed big penalties for SP30s (or SACs) unless you call up and make your case.

Speed awareness courses? Admiral are one of the companies that makes you check the box if you took the course instead of the points/fine and then factors that into your premium.

But, like all of these things, the amount you actually pay seems to come down to a battle of willpower between yourself and the person on the phone.

Can you discount it by X?
No.
Is there someone you can ask who would let you discount it by X?
Yes.
Can you ask them please?
It means you have to go on hold.
Thats fine.
...

I have one SP30, approaching a 70 limit in a 50... speed camera inside the 70 zone covering the brow of the hill.

Clocked at 60mph in 2015 was denied a speed awareness course, hence the interest, so many thanks for the advice

I shopped around when I bought my 2.5 Z in may having 2 SP30s and 2 non fault accidents, Adrian Flux was the best quote by a large margin would recommend them.

Give A-Plan a ring at Thatcham and speak to Richard Goodman. 01635 874646

We have all our cars insured with them now as they are very reasonable with a variety of different circumstances. They will mirror no claims and even a claim this year made little difference to the renewal.

I use the same guys for all of my cars too, have done for a few years. Would definitely recommend giving them a call.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Seems my Boxster delivery now looks like last week in November, I’ll be getting in touch with some of your recommendations a little nearer the time.
