What makes a new car ‘new’?

Post by Woots » Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:26 pm

So I’ve bought a new car, I won’t say what it is yet to keep the suspense...I changed my mind many times
Went into a dealership to take advantage of an offer and they had sourced one at a different dealership and would swap one they had in their stock with theirs to make the deal
The one in my local dealer was overspecced and out of what I wanted to pay
So I randomly checked the vin and it says it was built mid May
So now I’m wondering what it’s been doing these past few months at the other dealership? Sat in a port? Sat in a warm room? Had loads of people sitting it in? Been used on loads of test drives?
Obviously it’s been sold as a new car and the sales exec didn’t mention it had been used as a demo car but now I’m worrrying
Obviously I’ll try and email her as I’m away, but what if she says it’s had 150 miles on it?

No I’m not sure...yet
She didn’t say it was demo and I had no idea how long it’s been in existence until I just checked the vin
I’m just wondering where it’s been the last 3 months since it was made?
It’s not pre reg as it’s a 68 plate

It will have been sat at the docks or on a airfield.

Although my current Z4 was built in August 2006, it wasn't registered until December 2006. :?

But nearly 12 years and 80+K miles later it still works! :)

So long as it doesn't have significant mileage I wouldn't worry if I was getting a decent deal.
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

No, I'd hope for less than that! In January 2008 I bought a pre-reg 123d that was registered in September 2007 and when I picked it up it had done 17 miles! And 4 or 5 of those were my test drive.

Question to ask is whether you are the first registered keeper - it’s new if you are & delivery mileage is under 100 miles.

Huge discounts are available if it has been Pre-registered & like my Merc, which only did 200 miles in 3 months as a demo car - paid 60% of actual list price.

The mileage could be as a result of the dealership collecting the car from point of entry and not waiting for the transporter. It sounds like it was a stock order or customer order that wasn't wanted in the end. To qualify as a 'demo car' it has to to taxed and registered (tax purposes) so its unlikely to have been a demo. TBH 150 miles is really neither here nor there as it could collect that pre-delivery being shipped around various holding points. Push for a heavy discount as the dealership are likely to have had it since June and they are now under some pressure to get it sold because the manufacturer will want paying.

How far away is the other dealer they're swapping with? You can add those miles on for a start.

So, what car is it :poke:
2008 E85 3.0si
Space Grey, Dream Red New England heated Msports.
Xenons, MFSW, cruise, PDC, wind deflector.
ZHP, stubby, gloss black grilles, DLV box, gaptech, no CDV.
