F1 Halo proven

Post by john-e89 » Thu Aug 30, 2018 1:47 pm

Personally I was a very very reluctant supporter of the halo brought in this year, I thought it spoilt the looks and ethos of open cockpit single seaters but if it stopped another incident like the Jules Bianchi tradegy I had to begrudgingly support it then after the Belgium GP who can argue against it? Who knows how C Leclerc would have fared without it, we’ll obviously never know but looking at all angles I think he would have been hurt definitely. Horrible looking frame but certainly does it job.

I think it's like most F1 changes , you get used to it and if it saves one life it's worth it. Still makes me wonder if it hinders vision though.

I'm not convinced it would have hit his head - if you look at the top of the halo the mini aerofoil is undamaged, which means it was a glancing impact away from his head. The air intake behind probably did more to deflect the impact than the halo. Still not convinced the halo answers any meaningful safety question.

I cannot understand why the front strut has to be in the centre. Surely two front struts, one either side, would be better from a driver's viewpoint?

The halos were inevitable. It's for the same reason that all Le Mans cars have enclosed cockpits.

I guess if you had 2 front risers you would have 2 blind spots and possibly issues turning in at the correct time/spotting correct turn ins for corners.

As all cars must have the same, same handicap.

It’s when a change was done in the past to favour a certain team that got my goat

I don't think it"s worth it. If you push to limits then you push to the ultimate limits. The IoM TT make s F1 look like a fashion parade.

Yep and from this pic I’m sure he avoided a face full of front tyre, halo did it’s job very well.

I think that pic may be the Macau GP.
You see a lot of pics of the riders that are so close to the wall that they pass spectators a few feet away and they can hardly be seen.

I think you’re right, that’s Michael Rutter who’s a bit of a specialist round there :o

I thought the halo looked cr*p, but after the Spa GP it made sense to have it. These days we don't expect F1 drivers to be dicing with death every time they race.

Which is what makes the IOM a whole different ball-game, because those riders really are doing just that every time they ride the course.

A rider died at the TT, and another at the Classic - those guys must have the biggest appendages in motorsport!

That's why I have the utmost respect for Peter Hickman - fastest man around the TT circuit ever.
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
