OMG! - but have I missed something here - I can't tax a car if I buy it but because the DVLA site is down however the last owner can't inform them they no longer have the car because the site is down!

So any ANPR machine will think its still taxed - to the last owner; assuming that is the ANPR data base doesn't run back and check with the DVLA anyway. Shame speed cameras don't check with the DVLA or we could all have a blast of a time

and people think I'm crazy - follow the logic people!

I'd have to agree with the above - the first inkling that the DVLA have that a car is sold is when they receive the v5c through the snail mail, and that's assuming seller sends the v5c immediately (a dealer might only send a bunch of them off once a week). So assuming the vehicle was taxed before, I dont think it'll be a problem.

This is probably the only way you would get caught with no tax, if you buy it privately and it was taxed before you bought it the system will still show that its taxed until the system is back up and running. Cars being sold by dealers will not have tax on them.

Spot on - but caught by who? unless ANPR and Police have a stand alone data base how will they know?

True, You would think as well if its that important that people should not buy a car that weekend it should be on national news.
I wonder what they expect people to do that don't know about it and hand over cash for a car expecting to tax online and then drive away?
Most people will take the chance.

One of the guys at work was picking up his new car this Sunday, I mentioned this to him, he rang the dealers (Ford) who said they didn't know about it, rang him back 5 minutes later, with the car details so he could tax it, apparently they are doing maintenance from 3pm on Friday to 6am on Monday, what could possibly go wrong

Probably find that we all need to re-tax our cars on Monday after some IT bod has deleted the database and it's backup! :D

I’m am suppose to pick my car up on Sat, assume I can get the 12 number code off the V5 bottom slip off them tomorrow in order to tax it, otherwise I’m screwed unless I risk it
