Dash cams for F31 330d

Post by IRD » Fri Jul 06, 2018 3:51 pm

Just enquired about having a dash cam (front and rear) fitted to our year old F31 330d. Apparently a Version 2 of BMW’s own dash cam is due out any time now. They are not releasing it until the dealers have sold all of their stock of Version 1s. The friendly guy at Soper BMW in Lincoln warned me that the release of new camera is imminent and advised against buying until it is released. Because the car is still under warranty I am pretty well stuck with buying original equipment or taking a risk of invalidating the warranty by installing something from another manufacturer. Needless to say Soper will only install original BMW parts. Here’s the crunch, they want £728.00 for the camera and fitting. To put it mildly, that seems rather a lot of money. I would love to hear what others with cars under warranty have done and how much they have paid.

Wait, you won't lose your warranty because you have fitted a dashcam! You can take the A pillar cover out, put the wire from behind the rear mirror to the fuse box and that's it.

I use a YI 1080p dashcam in my 2017 M140i, its plugged into the cigarette port under the glovebox. It cost £26 plus £10 for an sd card. We had a nextbase 212 hardwired into the 2016 520d using the fuse adaptor. No problems with either but the YI has a better image and mobile app for viewing recordings.

Thanks for responding. It looks as if it shouldn’t be a problem to use non original equipment. Your costs amount to slightly less than the £728 BMW want. I’ll have a look at the Y1 that is a very price. It is always good to buy on recommendation.

I've got a Transcend cam and been really pleased with the quality and the phone App. I use it in both the Hyundai and M140i. Just hide the cable and plug into the 12v. Film quality is good and was around 90 quid.

I do wonder though it would probably be better facing backwards as you're more likely to be rear ended. More tricky if you want it hardwiring and can understand warranty implications but even so 700 quid is pretty eye watering. For what they do I would just plug one in.

Tim.

Yes, £720 is ridiculous. I ‘ll keep looking until I find something suitable at a sensible price and go with the’plug it in ‘ option.
