Where to go away for my 30th (Car related if possible)

Post by hopz121 » Wed Jul 04, 2018 9:23 pm

Hi all,

Tough one here, I am 30 soon ish and for a gift my partner wants to take me away.

For her 30th last month I took her to Amsterdam for a long weekend which we both enjoyed.

I am struggling with ideas for mine though, I am a total car Nut so ideally would like to put something g car related into it.

Looking at going last week in August or October half term (misses is a teacher) budget is around £1000!

Thoughts so far are NC500 or Ring trip I havnt done either but have always wanted to, however I am not sure what else there is to do in either place other than driving. It maybe better to go to these places not as a couple.

Another was Ibiza as I absolutely love the place but I have been many times and fancied something different.

Looking at going for 4-5 days

Any ideas anyone?

If we went to the ring what else could we do on the road trip that’s not just a ring trip.

Thanks

Ash

I love a good roadtrip :driving: with the Mrs how about a drive - stay - drive - stay trip in UK ?
Easily doable on 100-150 miles a day with a nice hotel each night to keep the lady happy
Snowdonia
Yorkshire Dales
Lake District
Peninnes
Yorkshire Moors
Northumberland
Scottish Borders ( if at all possible try to reach the Cairngorms / Braemar before turning back )
Bowland Fells
Ribble Valley
Peak District

You don't have to do all above of course :P they are all places i have loved exploring by car & some great places to stay over

If considering the RIng, best to check TF opening times for the dates you are considering. Being closed could make the decision for you.
The RIng is a great experience, but IMO not great for couples. There are some nice places to visit locally, Cochem, Bad Munstereifel, Boppard etc, plus some really nice villages more local to the Ring, however there's not really that much to do, other than wandering about, spectating or doing laps.
You could however consider an overnight in Brugge on the way there and somewhere like Bouillon on the way back, both nice scenic towns, with lots of bars and restaurants.
With a bit of planning there are good routes to be found. Also, if possible, mid week laps will be much quieter, especially in October.

Nc500 is next on my list so that's my vote, nice bnbs/hotels along the way.
Will the better half be ok with that much driving?

You can do a Ring trip on £1000, but you'll not get to do many laps - and the weather can change at the flip of a coin.

My regular 'long weekends' cost about £1500 all-in for 1 person in a £50/night B&B:
  • Ferry - £100
  • Hotel - £150
  • Food & drink - £150
  • Petrol - £300 (fill up at 1/2 empty and cost about £40/top-up; get 4-5 laps per 1/2 tank)
  • Laps - £300 for about 15 laps
  • 1st party insurance - £200
  • Prep & maintenance - £400 (spare pads, oil change, brake fluid change)

Good idea. I'm going for a mate's 40th, but we booked it all (including 'posh' camping) in about March.

You'll probably have to pay for a more expensive hospitality package now if you want a grandstand seat (about double the price as you get access to a paid bar), as most of the cheaper grandstand seats are sold...and general admission will just mean you'll not see anything unless you're queuing up from the early hours.

Scotland road trip gets my vote - up the west coast A82, loop the NC500 coming back via the Old Military Road (A93).
Hasten to add I've not done this so you will no doubt have to fine tune this basic route and pick nice hotels along the way.

NC 500 would be my choice with the 4-5 days you've got
There's plenty of tourist attractions on the route to break up the driving for the Mrs if you do a bit of planning
I would recommend The Torridon if you're looking to splash the cash - https://www.thetorridon.com/ :D

There are still good options available for Spa. I'm taking the ///M and have just booked a grandstand seat at the top of Eau Rouge and a glamping tent with VIP lounge and Martin Brundle as a guest speaker on Friday night.

This is my thought, id love to go but maybe something to do with the boys as I don't think she'd appreciate it. (she says she wouldn't mind but I am not convinced, I think she is just being nice)

This is my worry, also I am sure she will start moaning when the roads get interesting and the S54 starts to scream :D
