Good roads in Devon?

Post by Dave1971 » Sun Jun 10, 2018 9:00 pm

The wife and I are off to Devon with friends this year for the annual surf trip. Now normally I just tag along and try and find something to fill my time cos I don't surf. I've tried and trust me it's not a pretty sight.

Anyway this year we've bought ourselves a van so as well as her surfboard I get to take my motorcycle too. So I'm looking for recommends for good roads to ride and places to visit.

Good roads in Devon?

Saunton sands is a very nice long break if it’s working, the sand bank is shallow so the wave doesn’t jack up and spit you out, it’s a slow but very nice wave, lots of room but best at the right hand side next to the cliffs, Just the other side of the headland is Putsborough, a smaller beach linked to Woolacombe, a more demanding and usually bigger, more exciting wave when it’s offshore wind and tide coming in, can get pretty big. Between the two is Croyde bay, a very steep sand bank that if working will fire big waves out of nowhere, especially off the reef to the left, best left to the experienced surfer but a big adrenaline rush if you’re feeling brave. Head to Barnstable for all 3 beaches, a very nice place to spend the day even if you’re not surfing, lovely beaches. Croyde is privately owned and very clean, but all 3 are superb and nice to get too. Enjoy.

Which coast are you heading for? North South or West, which is best Lots of good roads too many to list. The good road are alas not where the good beaches are though. For obvious reasons, ie those roads are full of emits with camper vans :P

Thanks for the suggestions john the other half really pleased as we are staying in a National Trust property just near Countisbury, looks like about a 45 min drive to the beaches. We normally stay in Cornwall and are a little closer to the surf beaches but fancied a change this year.

Buzyg we’re on the south coast but I’ll have all day to myself while the gang are out surfing so can go pretty much where I like :D .

The old A30 between Exeter and South Zeal is a good road. Though you might get traffic this time of year. Or take the coast road down to the B3254 from Killerton to Launceston, it's a favourite of mine and usually quite. Out of the villages you can get some real speed up and enjoy the constant changes in elevation and direction through some well sighted corners. Stop at Litton Farm shop for a great Pastie just past Launceston, then take the Holsworthy road back North.

Loads of other fun roads but most of the faster A roads will have traffic this time of year. Have a good one.
