High Mileage Cars

Post by JamieZ4C » Fri May 25, 2018 9:13 am

One of my favourite topics. I call it 'bangernomics'!

I always buy older cars with higher miles but, obviously, where there's evidence they've been well maintained. I've owned countless cars that I bought with over 100k miles and ran all of them successfully for years. The comparatively low depreciation was always the biggest factor in making a good bangernomics car.

Best car was a Seat Toledo 1.9 tdi I bought with 120k for £2,300. I then put 60k miles on her over 5 years before selling for £900. Buy a new Focus and it will lose more than £1,400 just driving it off the forecourt!

Did more need fixing compared with a car with half the miles? Yes, of course. But nothing out of the ordinary and I LIKE fixing cars! :driving:

My coupe has done 104k and my Passat DD has done 135k. Both going very strong and hopefully will be for many years

+1 for loving high mileage motors. My wifes Audi A4 estate (B4) had 250k on the clock when we moved it on - still going strong now as I see it regularly - built like a battleship. There is something very satisfying about a well worn motor that keeps on going....

High Mileage Cars

Sold our XC90 18 months ago with 257k on it 150k of which I did and it was pretty faultless other than normal wear and tear items. My 8 year old van is just nudging 240k and looks and drives as good as new. The 95k 10 year old Shitroen family bus is a different kettle of fish though..

I've never been scared of high milers as long as they've been properly maintained. I think you have more to fear from low mileage cars that have had time based services and the like missed as the owners don't think their use warranted them..

it was actually 400k and not 500k on the 7 series, but still a solid effort!

I don't think we will be quibbling over the odd 100k :)
