Wheel Storage

Put it together earlier today and had no problem getting 8 wheels inside - much better!

My Dad has two of them full of his wheels, my wheels and even Mikes wheels and still some in the hut and the garage

Have either of you got pictures of the wheels inside? I wasn't sure whether two wheels would sit next to eachother side by side in the space? May have to get one just for our wheels! Ton bags are maybe just as much council as tarpaulin?

I don’t but if I’m there in the next week I can get a picture but you can usually stack up to 4 on top of each other and then the same on the other side and actually you could get another wheel or two I between standing up, if you’ve an odd number in your set(s)

Another fan here, although I have one of the “outdoor wardrobe” style ones. They look pretty smart and when they get grubby you can just pressure wash them back to new.

They do more than one size. I made a point of getting the largest one so it would take 2 sets of 4 - you can just about make it out in the photo even if I can't get it the right way up!

Just so you know I had 2 sets of standard size 18" wheels in there - 108s and 32s. Both with standard size tyres, i.e. two 225/40 X18 and two 255/35 x 18. And there was still room on top for a 17" space-saver (for if/when I ever get around to going for non-RFTs).

Just make sure you get the "Max" version! It comes in a pretty big package as it's got polystyrene protection, but it will fit in a 3 Series Touring with the back seats down.

So does everyone prefer to store their 'spare' wheels at their own place rather than finding some commercial storage options?

Only reason I ask is because I was toying with renting a unit somewhere to store wheels/tyres as a service - don't know if there would be any appetite for that.

Not for "these" wheels (e85 / e86 / e46) IMO. A service like this would cost more than the wheels value? Surely?

God knows. All I know is that my garage is full* of wheels that I'd prefer to store elsewhere, and if I'm going to do that, perhaps others would be interested too!

(* - slight exaggeration; my 4 winter wheels & tyres are stacked up at the back of the garage but I can't get to the stuff behind them )

If you're prepared to spend on storing them, then I'd suggest a wall mounted storage system of some sort? They do wall mounted types which secure the wheel through the center hole of the alloy (not really advisable to store on the tyre if you're leaving vertically for long periods). Possibly freeing up some "ground space". We don't have a garage sadly, else that's where the Zed would sleep!

Interesting idea. I've got about 20 wheels stored away at the moment, would be good to have the space back...

A few years ago I had a part-time job in a self-storage warehouse and we had a customer who rented a unit for his wheels. We'd see him a few times each year when he swapped to his winters in the Autumn (his car then hers), then again in the Spring when he swapped back. He was German, BTW!

But I'm pretty sure he was paying £60 to £70 a month for a unit that would just about take 8 wheels and a trolley jack!

That works out to £700/800 a year - makes a plastic Keter look like a bargain!

I was wondering what sort of costs would be involved in a unit as I wouldnt have thought it would be cheap even for a small unit.
It makes my £400 shed look like a bargain.
I like having the wheels at home where I can change when I need to without driving anywhere on snow covered roads. Thats the whole point in having winter tyres. Half an hour sees the wheels swapped over and I am on my way.
Last year I finished work but had to go back in later and snow was forecast. I got home at 5 changed the wheels, had my dinner and went back to work for 7.
