Euro cash

Post by ronk » Wed Apr 04, 2018 1:04 pm

We are off to France next week so we need a few Euros of the folding variety - I normally keep an eye on the tourist exchange rate via the Post Office app and that was showing €1.12

They show the local post offices on the app so off we went and changed £800 - when I got home I realised the exchange actually given was €1.07

The small print on the app says that the rate is Online only.

That’s cost me £40 for not reading it properly :headbang:

I normally change money at my local Tesco and they always give the internet rate - guess where I will get my Euros for the summer Germany trip?

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

we normally find sainsburys to give the best rates for currency exchange - however for a recent trip to japan we bought our Yen online, which was delivered (signed for, obviously) through the post. very straightforward.

I never get cash in the UK ,just get cash in Europe as you will get the inter bank rate, not tourist rate.

For 1.07 I would have sold you the Euros :)

Exactly this, Euro around 1.14 atm. You can get a Barclay Card just for holiday transactions. It doesn't charge cash withdrawal fees and no interest as long as you pay off the next bill in full. Worked a treat in Portugal and will be used gain for France the summer

What about surcharges? Surely they outweigh the difference between exchange rate and IBOR?

What surcharges? My NatWest card does not charge anything for foreign currency, so I get the straight rate of whatever I spend. Whether on cash or when paying for a meal, I still get the same flat rate without additions or charges.

Ditto for the Halifax card. No additional charges - I normally withdraw cash if I need it and pay the small fee as soon as I get back to the UK .

This. Get enough to tide you over, then get the rest abroad.

Agree !
I’ve got enough ready / folding stuff for a couple of Euro trips - the rest is on the Halifax card which doesnt attract any additional charges. Any cash drawn on it has interest applied but I normally pay that as soon as I get home to the UK - However now that phone calls are within the uk allowance, I will pay the bill on the day!
